Rules of Civility by Amor Towles. Also by Towles - A Gentleman in Moscow. Historical fiction. He's great at character development and tells interesting stories.
We were Liars, by E. Lockhart. It kept me intrigued and I couldn’t put it down. It’s the kind of book I would give anything to be able to read again for the first time, without knowing how it ends.
Second this. It has everything- suspense, romance, a bit of action. Love this book!
Complications by Dr. Atul Gawande is pretty amazing
Thank you, I’ll check it out
@lonslibrary on instagram, https://www.goodreads.com/review/list/85939491-alanna?shelf=read on goodreads. I read 100 books a year and review all of them.
Three books I've read that really stuck with me for various reasons: An Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman, An American Marriage by Tayari Jones, and Ninefox Gambit by Yoon Ha Lee
Second an American Marriage. I read that one so quick, it was great
Native Son by Richard Wright. Great commentary on race relations if you’re into that, but also well written and entertaining
“Maybe you should talk to someone” by Lori Gottlieb
Yes, the audiobook was a fun listen! Let me know if you have found something similar that’s fun to read/listen
“Political Tribes” very good read. I didn’t realize how little I knew about the middle east.
Thank you! Added to my list.
Halfway through The Count of Monte Cristo - loving it - if you’re looking for an adventure/revenge story
You can do it!!
I enjoyed the Midnight Library by Matt Haig
I LOVED this book!!
Homegoing - Yaa Gyasi
A Gentleman in Moscow - Amor Towles
A Wild Sheep Chase - Haruki Murakami
The Tyranny of Merit - Michael Sandel
The Remains of the Day - Kazuo Ishiguro
I’ll start, some of the books I read recently and loved:
Shoe Dog
The Berlin Wall: A World Divided
The song of Achilles
Factfulness
Poor Economics
I recently read Never split the difference and loved it. If u are into startups zero to one and mastering the vc game are pretty cool!
Anything by Carl Sagan. He wrote popular science. One of my favorite books of all time is Demon Haunted World.
Mountains by Mountains by Paul Farmer is another favorite of mine.
Someone else already mentioned Complications by Atul Gawande, but most of his books are worth a read.
I recently read a book called Flatland which is pretty interesting by Edwin Abbott. It was written a long time ago and is an interesting mix of math and social commentary.
Another favorite is Godel, Escher, and Bach. I don't even know how to describe it, but it's great.
Thank you!! I’ll check all of these out.
Shantaram.
Lost and Wanted by Nell Freudenberger.
Fascinating novel involving astrophysics, classical literature, and a deep sense of loss.
I recently loved Piranesi by Susanna Clarke. Short but amazingly atmospheric; I can’t stop thinking about it.
The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle (best book i've ever read. Mystery, clever, twisty, creative as fuck)
Goddess in the Machine (YA dystopian)
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo (beautiful story chronicling a fictional cuban movie star navigating her way through 50s and 60s hollywood)
The Murder of Roger Ackroyd (best Agatha Christie novel)
Lets Pretend This Never Happened and
Furiously Happy (both by Jenny Lawson. Hilarious essays about her mental health struggles. Brutally honest and bizzarely laugh out loud funny)
The Stranger Beside Me. By Ann Rule. True crime story of Ted Bundy and the journalist who befriended him. Best Bundy book out there.
Others to consider:
The Vanishing Half
The Hate You Give
Untamed
Big little Lies
Little Fires Everywhere
You’ve read and recommend Roger Ackroyd (100 percent agree, mind blowing book)! You are my spirit reader. Never heard about 71/2 deaths but picking it up now
The Vanishing Half - Incredible story exploring themes of racial identity, colorism, and the meaning of family.
Transcendent Kingdom - Explores the impacts of addiction and grief on a Ghanaian immigrant family and the complexities of mother/daughter relationships.
The Bear and the Nightingale - Set in feudal Russia. Deals with the conflict between Russian folklore/traditional mythology and growing Orthodox Christianity. Wonderful headstrong female main character. Fantasy genre.
If you want a deep and amazing read that you can read over and over again: The Broken Earth trilogy is amazing.
Thank you for kindly clarifying genre. I like sci-fi in general. This wasn’t a good read for me. Good to hear you liked it (4 times!) and I understand she has a very large fan following.
