I don’t like it as a city, but I found SF to be more interesting than NYC as far as producing work. In NYC we have these giant dinosaur agencies with giant dinosaur clients, and getting good relevant work out the door is like doing a K turn with the Titanic. Plus SF’s mix of tech companies might give you a soft landing when you tire of agency life.

Drive up the coast to Vancouver. It's a small market but also services national clients and there are a few shops doing really good work.
Plus you get that work life balance. And it's much more pleasant than Seattle.

What’s going on in Vancouver?
Thank you! I’d love to land there at some point in my career. The area really speaks to me.
Acd1, have you made the switch from the us to Canada? Isn’t it hard to secure a work permit? Also the cost of living is even higher in bc than it is in Seattle, but bc is lovely.
I have not. I'm Canadian. But I've worked with plenty of expats. Agencies aren't opposed to bringing you on and paying for it.
Alternatively, if you're on the art side of things you can come up pretty easily on a TN Visa as a "graphic designer". Not sure if the NAFTA visas are still options now though? I'd have to look into it.
And yes, cost of living is high in Vancouver compared to the rest of Canada. Though I know Seattle is creeping up as well. It's still nothing compared to SF.
You’re right-it sucks here. We peaked in the 1990s and early 2000s. Great agencies, opportunities and award-winning work at all the small independent agencies that were here. I hope you find a better place
