Second year associate. I got ranked in the top tier of my class last year and got excellent reviews. But since the new year, I just feel like I can’t stop screwing up- running the wrong redline, coding errors in doc review. Producing unhelpful research. I’m trying to focus and do better. Any advice?

Third year here and I make the same mistakes more often than I wish to. One tip I found useful is to slow down and read the request/question and my work product again before it goes out especially when I am in a hurry. I don’t do much research so that is always a challenge when I do get a research assignment but it doesn’t hurt to read again what others are asking you to do.

On an unrelated note, how do you know you got ranked in the top tier of your class year? Is that shared during your review?

Sounds like a very… collegial environment.

Usually when I get like this it’s because I need a break to reset. And no matter how much I try to power through it, I continue to make mistakes I usually wouldn’t until I get to take a vacation.

Bain & Company What is the likelihood of making SAC in September 2022 if I join as an AC on April 18th at Bain & Company? I am a senior consultant at EY with 3.5 years of experience in Data Analytics. Or is March 2023 more realistic? They told me 6 months for promotion but it seems like the two promotion cycles with my different start dates give me 4 or 9 months of experience, nothing in between. I’ll be joining in the private equity group which will be new for me.

Plaintiffs counsel took my clients deposition today. He mentioned that he would likely be ordering the transcripts and I suggested we split the cost of them (in front of court reporter). He got pretty defensive and said absolutely not, it’s unfair to the court reporter, and that it is frowned upon in the industry to do that. Each party orders (and pays for) their own copy. I’m in my 2nd year of practice, never heard such a thing. I’ve actually split the cost before! Curious for insight on this…
