The litigators I know who seconded were senior associates who then left the firm shortly after to stay at their secondment. They ended up in more senior level roles at their respective companies, which tended to have a decent volume of litigation—and/or regulatory—activity.

What’s your goal? Looking to go in-house, or just want a breather, and then back to biglaw?

Definitely want to go back to biglaw at this point, but thought it could be an interesting learning opportunity? Possibly a way to find a niche… but afraid of missing out on trial opportunities, depositions, more substantive stuff.

Didn't end up making the cut in Strategy consulting case interviews. Would really like to do strategy / S&O some day. I love using data to inform decision-making.

Wondering if it would make sense to continue consulting in implementation then try to pivot again in the future or at another level - or drop consulting & try to get a strategy job at a startup or maybe do something else at a larger company and try to pivot internally.

Would you take a job that pays well ($100k more) but not very interesting to meet your FIRE goal? It may even be a step down in your career but well… it pays well.

Or would you take another job that you are excited for, mentally challenging, definitely going to be more stressful but it is going to push you toward a more fulfilling work (at least to my ego 🤣). It pays a lot less.

Hi folks. I'm in my sixth year of prosecution and have hit the glass ceiling. My next options are to run for office (ew), stay where I am and get state sanctioned raises for the rest of my career (ew), or jump ship. I'd like to get into plaintiff's litigation. Any tips would be much appreciated on 1.) switching expertise, 2.) fully remote or hybrid work (I love my house & don't want to move), 3.) where to find jobs openings. Thanks!

Currently my salary as a second year associate at an ID firm is 92k with bonus structure. However, I originated almost 250k in legal fees received this year. Mostly from corporate and individual clients I brought to the firm. Is this something most second associates are expected to do or should I leverage this into a sizable raise with the partners?

Is litigation an art or a science?

art: subjects of study primarily concerned with the processes and products of human creativity and social life, such as languages, literature, and history

science: a systematically organized body of knowledge on a particular subject.

Waiting now 13 months for a decision on a pre-answer motion to dismiss for an employment/business law dispute. Been administratively adjourned eight times and bounced around now two judges. The applicable law is straightforward, requires some reading but nothing heavy lifting, so it should not take this long. Of course client is livid, but what can I do? Has anyone ever actually had any luck with a phone call to chambers in this situation? And what's the longest you ever waited for a decision?

I'm really lost in my career. Started out in ID and hated it, jumped around and made it out of ID to my desired area. Been at my current firm almost a year, but it's totally toxic and I'm likely being pushed out. Trying to make it work and stay here for as long as I have as I've jumped a lot in a short time and frankly I don't want to jump again. I had the chance to go back to ID and work for an old mentor who is incredible and go back to doing what he does (continued in comments)

Newer attorney with opposing party in pro per in CA. Pro per emailed me the following:
Demand for Production
Form Interrogatories General

He did not provide any proof of service, nor did he verify I was authorized to accept service for the cross-complaint. (After receiving the items, my client did grant me permission.)

Is Pro Per permitted to serve these items himself?
Am I obligated to respond to the disc. requests/cross-comp until properly served?

I am looking to lateral to a new firm. Is anyone familiar with the following firms:

Wilson Elser
Thiebaud Remington Thornton Bailey LLP
Mayer, LLP
Sheehy Ware Pappas & Grubbs

I'd really appreciate the advice. I have interviews with these firms this upcoming week.

Thanks in advance.

Has anybody been one day late in submitting their Opp? I thought the return date was Tuesday (tomorrow) because my brain kept reminding me today was a federal holiday, but now I see the return date is the 27th and seven days before would be…today. 😔

I authored all of the briefs in a 9th circuit appeal. My managing partner did the oral argument. Opinion was issued today; and we lost on appeal. The decision was issued as “for publication” opinion. Do I add this case to my Resume/CV list of published opinions? Yes, we’re on the losing side (we lost below too; we were the appellant); but it’s still a published case where I was the brief writer. Would you still “claim” it on your Resume/CV as evidence of your appellate experience?

Writing sample question. I drafted a really complex dispositive motion that was granted. It was obviously revised by the partners on the case but can I still use it as a sample?

Obviously I would redact or change client/identifying information. It was publicly filed and is available on the public docket. I am not one of the attorneys of record.

Curious what people have done in the past. I'm interested in lateral positions so can't exactly ask the partners I work with.

I was just a part of Lyft’s layoff. I am looking for an in-house paralegal position. Any leads?

I have a case I have enough evidence on to go to summery judgement on off the gate. Procedurally what's the best way to go a out this? D's are unrepresented and extremely difficult about settlement talks.

What perks did you ask for in your year-end review (other than salary increase)?

I’ve been extremely busy. Because of this, I have less patience for the constant follow up required for me to get things out the door (I’m talking about weeks of unanswered e-mails and phone calls). I have been finding it difficult to raise the issue because everyone seems appreciative and many partners (including the ones who are causing the unnecessary stress) go out of their way to tell me what a fantastic job I’m doing. Any suggestions as to how to raise this without jeopardizing my status?

Any insight into MG&M? Culture, salary, billable hour requirements, etc. Third year associate looking to lateral.

I am a third year associate in insurance coverage and am struggling to see how I will be able to develop a book of business when the clients are only looking to work with partners and have established rules about how to get on their panels. Any suggestions on how to set myself up to make inroads? I recognize this is still likely to be a couple years down the line.

Need some assistance getting a disclosure order for a URL in the US.

The page defamed someone in Barbados

Can anyone assist.

I know I won't be an outlier, but I'm a young associate, and I'm finding it really hard to stay healthy and have much of a personal life. Not just because I'm not making time for these things, but because I'm often exhausted and think about work a lot. I do what I can to shift my focus, but want to get into a better life routine. Any tips on this?
