Seeing couple of my mgr getting laid off after 15-20 yrs in the same company got me some panic attack, I got nauseated just to think of the instability, and what would I do in 15 yrs to secure a good future? I do not love what I do, but I cannot afford a fancy MBA, or start a CS master degree. no family money, work on visa(so I cannot leave my current job freely and they lowball pay me), saved up to get an condo couple yrs ago and still get some mortgage, 130k in savings including 401k.

What company do you work for ?

I was laid off very early in my career. You learn real quick that employers don’t have any loyalty. Even if your manager loves you it may not be under their control to promote/keep you. Best thing you can do is 1. Do what you love 2. Be the best at it 3. Keep an eye on trends in that job market/industry and do whatever it takes to stay elite. Study, training, education etc. Being one of the best is the only thing you really have under your control as an employee. Keeping your skills up makes you marketable and you can go anywhere. Use that fear to drive you..

The fear drives me but also gave me anxiety attack from time to time. The fitting survivor style is really not my take.

I was in the same situation - on a work visa. Just hope they will sponsor your green card in the near future and then you will be free. It took 2 years to get mine but they don’t start right away.

After 4 years into my job, I got sponsored for greencard the process is usually 2 years to get in the queue, and couple of years to get the real one. Total torture for work green cards. A year after that I got married to an American citizen, so marriage greencard is on the way but also took a while.
