Seeking advice and options for careers I could potentially pivot into outside of accounting.

Originally I picked an accounting degree because it appeared as a safe choice for a long term career. Decent pay and always in demand in any industry. All of which has proven to be true, recruiters are always in my email and LinkedIn inbox. However, after doing 2 years of internships in bookkeeping \ audit while in college, 3 years in audit with GT, and now 1 year as an industry senior..Continue below:

.... accountant I'm starting to think this career path is not for me. I don't particularly enjoy the work or find it interesting AT ALL - posting JEs, reconciling accounts, digging for variances etc., and as a result I feel I am not "good" at my job. I don't have my CPA. I do enjoy the admin side of a business... managing a team, communicating with vendors and clients, managing the flow of data and files to the necessary parties etc.

Not really sure where to go from here. I'm sure many here have been in my position previously. I would appreciate hearing your story and how you made the pivot out of accounting.

Me too folks ^

You are fast approaching the point of no return if you haven’t already reached it. Reach out and look for “hybrid” roles if you are stuck in accounting. They are more accounting focused, but can help to pivot further into a more financed focused role.

Started it, got too busy while I'm audit, exams expired, and I never got the motivation to pursue it again. With my current mindset I'm not sure I even want to pursue it at this point as I would rather be doing something else

Recently went through this as well! went from IT audit to a strategy role. the tldr of how I got there was identifying what skills overlap and are key in strategy roles and then getting on projects where I could gain those skills. Do you have an inkling of what kind of roles you may be interested in? Perhaps fp&a, forensic accounting, or project management (based on what you said you liked about your roles)? That could help you align with projects at work to gain those skills so you can completely move

Not in accounting, but I think you could pivot to a strategy role. I facilitate coaching sessions and am happy to take a look at your resume and brainstorm with you if you’d like (totally ok if you want to remain anonymous too). I’ve helped a ton of people over the years navigate and find new opportunities. It’s literally just a matter of how you frame X for Y opportunity. Just a heads up though - it may be hard to transfer from accounting to something else internal to your firm, but it may be easier to find roles elsewhere where you can apply your skills in a different capacity and talk through skills transference.

Get your CPA then pivot to FP&A. The work is very project based and much more interesting/value-add than accounting. Can also look into getting PMP or MBA (added bonus if your employer pays for these).

Anyone find themselves interrupting too much? I tend to get excited when talking with friends or about something I'm passionate about, and I occasionally will totally interrupt someone (unintentionally) when I get too into it. No one has mentioned it to me but I've caught a few looks from friends when it happens, and I'd like to work on it just for the sake of being polite. Advice?

Does anyone else have problems with people from other disciplines just flat out rewriting strategy slides in decks? Any tips on how to get the behavior to stop? In internal checkins everyone always seems on board, but afterward they will just go in and completely change the slides without consulting me. I love feedback, but I've never experienced this before and rewriting slides without my input feels like a major line being crossed. Unless I'm just crazy? I truly don't know any more.
