Seeking advice on career paths within tech after bizops. Currently in bizops and former consultant, and while the work is fine I’ve realized that bizops feels similar to consulting and in the long term I’m looking for a role that has more ownership and ideally more analytical. Does anyone have any advice/anecdotes on other roles that may be suitable, and what it takes to get there? Thank you!

I feel like bizops roles are pretty analytical but you probably would be interested in product ops or product management

like

Most common paths I see for folks leaving my team.
- Internal: Product (typically PM / product strategy) and marketing
- External: Bizops roles at earlier stage/smaller companies w/ more upside

Look for roles that leverage your analytical problem solving skills, and think about who you want to work for. I’ve made my best career decisions based on the people.

like

Check out product management! You can definitely lean into your analytical strengths as a PM. Try talking to a few PMs at your company to learn more and see if you can find a mentor if it interests you

like

I just made that transition. I would say your path of least resistance is via internal transfer. Relationship and reputation are crucial to make the switch because the hiring manager is taking a risk on you being able to transfer your skill sets. A certain degree of self-advocacy is also needed.

Your advantage as biz ops is your problem solving ability and communication about high-level strategies. Use those as your advantage in advocating for yourself

like

Probably finance or data science fits the bill here.

Product is not more analytical fwiw.

Depending on experience, a GM role is a great path. BizOps gives fabulous breadth of experience. GM roles allow you to apply that breadth to a specific area.

I run a BizOps team. Where my team members have gone:
- Monetisation / Pricing & Packaging
- Sales Ops
- Broader BizOps roles at smaller cos
- Startup founder
- CFO (!) at a smaller company
