Seeking advice on how to gracefully accept bonuses you feel you deserve? I’m a plaintiff’s attorney in a small firm (1 associate, me and two partners). My salary is about 18k lower than market. I stayed because I genuinely do like the work and I was promised bonuses when finances allowed (no clearer policy/structure than that). I struggle with how to handle bonuses because I am grateful but I also feel like I deserve them given my low salary.

Just had a very uncomfortable conversation with a partner. I have some time off booked to go to my brother’s wedding (I’m the best man). We were chatting and I mentioned that my brother’s future husband is so nice and really a great guy, and we already consider him a member of our family. I spent 8 years at the same company, left in 2020 and am looking for job number 3 since then. I’ve grown my salary and experience significantly. Been practicing a year now. Of 6 attorneys, 4 will be retiring soon, and I was brought in to hopefully take over. I am troubled: first that my partners largely provide me with no guidance. They handed me a client with a large quantity of fairly straightforward casework and have been hands off since. There also hasn’t been any talk of a raise/performance review. How should I ask for guidance/mentor ship? How do I ask for a raise, or should I presume one is coming?

Does anyone else get super annoyed at having to provide the same information , documents or research to a partner numerous times? Anyone have any tips or advice on what to do when you’re representing a contractor who will receive membership interest in a startup company as compensation and the startup has expressed they do not have attorney to draft the company docs such as the membership transfer agreement and the amendment to the operating agreement? I have a very reliable stream of business (family friend has one patent that was infringed multiple times, huge firms have taken a few of these on contingency). For a Rule 45 subpoena duces tecum, can I mail it to the stat agent for a company or LLC? I took a case over from another firm and they sent subpoenas with a process server who was unable to personally deliver the subpoenas to the stat agent. I have always just mailed them.

I now have a potential client who is ready to litigate a dispute in different area of the law (a simple tort matter). My partners aren’t keen on taking case as it’s outside the firm’s practice area. Aside from having this potential client pay a large retainer, is there anyway to convince/persuade my partners to allow me to take this case?

Solo that has outgrown DIY document management/billing. Looking to make the leap to an integrated document management and billing software system. I'm a solo bringing in Associate to become partner. Associate has been compensated with a base salary, plus 1/3 of earnings for business he brings in. Firm expenses are around 55-60% of gross revenue. He brings in around 30% of revenue. How best can I bring him in, and at what percentage to be fair? Was thinking 20%, with 5% incremental increases as his business grows hopefully to greater than 30% of total revenue. Thoughts?
