Seeking advice pls- I’m looking at new roles for various reasons, one being that where I am at is not a healthy environment. I had an interview and everything for the most part was nice, but I didn’t like how my interviewer cursed a couple of times as part of the conversation. I have no problem with cursing it just felt a little too informal and comfortable for the setting. Am I overreacting? I’m just scared that I will be going to a more toxic environment.

Maybe I’m abnormal but I would take it as a sign the interviewer was extremely comfortable and not putting on false airs—a sign of being genuine.

If cursing was the only issue you saw, and it was in a context that didn’t suggest more problematic behavior, I’d probably ignore this. However, if the cursing was in some context that suggests they talk like this to other people (cursing AT people versus cursing generally in conversation), you might ask to talk to a few more people once you get an offer and try to better gauge the working environment.

like

Unless the cursing made no sense for the context, they were dropping f-bombs on the regular, or cursing AT someone this wouldn’t raise and issue for me; but I was in the military before being a lawyer so I probably have a bit of a tougher skin.

Generally I wouldn’t curse during something as formal as an interview, but absolutely do curse on the regular.

like

Very good point, thanks. It wasn’t geared at someone which is good. On the regular I have no problem with it. I guess what just makes me nervous is the fact that it was during an interview. Maybe it was just a way to keep the conversation more casual. I’m just having a rough go with current firm atm and I don’t want to be hypersensitive but also want be aware of potential red flags.

like

As long as not directed at someone, I wouldn't worry about it. Keep in mind that while an interview is very formal for you, it is one of the 100s of things law firm attorneys do each day and they are not necessarily viewed as uber formal from the interviewer side of the table.

like

At a previous firm I used to work at, one of the attorneys told me they intentionally curse during interviews to see how “uptight” the interviewee is. Turns out partners at that firm don’t have any qualms about verbally harassing associates. So, go with your gut. Might be nothing, but it might be a red flag.

like

Is there a way for you to talk to others at the firm? Swearing might just be this one person’s style and not representative of the firm.

like

Hahaha L1 that’s the goal!

Will you be interviewing with more people at the firm? If so, maybe you can get a better sense of the atmosphere there. Even if you are finished with interviews there, after you get your offer, you can ask to meet with additional attorneys. Also (in a separate post) you can ask on here if anyone knows the culture of the firm. (Don’t mention the interview in that post, though, so it stays anonymous.)

Thank you!

Just wanted to say I’m also interviewing right now in order to get out of a toxic environment. Good for you for recognizing the need for a change. It took me way too long to decide to leave my current position.

like

Life is too short to be in a bad environment if you don’t have to! Good luck and hope it works out well for you!

Lois like I’m in the minority here, but I wouldn’t like that. I think it shows unprofessionalism too and a little casual. Not sure that’s a good vibe for a law firm… however, lawyers do tend to curse a lot lol

like

I curse all the time and I’d consider myself extremely approachable, kind, and smart. I don’t curse at people but I do use curse words very casually even at work.
