I recently interviewed for L7 EM at Google and had 4 great interviews and one not so great system design. I submitted external referrals all of which gave great feedback. The recruiter said the next step is team match/interviews and then the HC. Anyone in a similar situation? What was the result? Google

And agreed, I also think planning (in the traditional sense anyway) is one of the most specialized skillsets, that’s really only required in advertising on a regular basis. That said, the core skills are transferable and would need to be used in different ways.
It’s just all about relationships at a senior level. Easy to do then
It is a very real and challenging issue for account planners. Client side people often just do not understand what account planners do, and therefore don’t know how it applies to their business. Account people manage people and the process which is easier for recruiters to grasp. With all that said, it is doable if you can make the right connections.

This is very real. Traditional account planning is only needed at agencies that do a lot of big creative work and there can be little to none of these agencies if you’re not in a major advertising city
I've always wondered if strategy's chance for going client side would be improved by completing a post-bacc business certificate. Not quite the cost and time of an MBA, but with something like that you'd be a proven marketer who can point to a knowledge of general finance, accounting, etc.
Hah. I have no clue. I'm also asking!
Quite a few skills should translate. Developing strategies (might help to point to non-advertising strategies you’ve helped on too), decision making, guiding a brand, selecting campaigns, leading research projects, etc. What will be missing is what I personally enjoy least 😉- all the billing and scheduling and business case development and internal politic stuff. I interviewed with for a couple of client side gigs, and just tried to be really upfront and honest about what experiences I had and what experiences I needed to continue developing. Might be a role out there that needs more strategic thinking in-house. Other option is full researcher. But if you’re worried about being a specialist...
