Self contained ASD room. Does anyone not follow school bell schedule? Do you start and end each hour like the Gen Ed kids ( 1st hr. 2nd hr. and so on)? If you don’t follow bells, how does that work for you and do you do anything different?

Self contained medically fragile class. We follow our own schedule except for arrival and dismissal

We follow the bells, and it gives my kids a great opportunity to practice routine. I think they enjoy it since they know their gen ed classmates are doing the same.

like

I’m my school, the ASD rooms follow bells for specials, or life skills classes. As well as lunch. Otherwise, they have an internal schedule for core subjects and subjects like personal hygiene, community based instruction and the like. Self contained rooms have more going on than general education core classes, so it is difficult to compare apples to apples.

If several of your students have inclusion classes through out the day following a bell schedule would work. Otherwise, individual schedules may make more sense with lunch/ allied arts aligned to the bell schedule.

Additional Posts in Special Education Teachers

I have been teaching students with special needs for 21 years now. The class size used to be 12:1. Now it’s 15:1, but you can have up to 18 students with the variance. Now my Principal said that you can have up to 19 students!!!! Is anyone else noticing that the self contained class is getting larger?

I have been working in special education for 12 years ; 8 years at the high school level and 4 years at the middle school level. I love my kids and what I do but I am seriously burnt out with all of the extra work that we have to do in addition to teaching. I want to be a general education 1st or 2nd grade teacher in hopes of avoiding the mountain of paperwork and the physical labor of assisting large students with daily personal care activities. What are the pros and cons of working in Gen Ed?
