Semi-recent lateral is super toxic- has forced out two long time support staff, aggressively takes credit for others’ work, and is always finding ways to throw people under the bus. How do younger and mid levels protect themselves without getting burned? Should someone express concerns to partners, or is it just a glaring red flag that the firm has kept someone like that around? (no book and not a specialist or high biller)

Can you give more info re: lateral's position and firm context?

Mid size large market firm, SA has probably 3 juniors who are generally staffed on their matters for a certain type of lit that’s brought in by various partners. Came from a big firm, don’t know the details there

Try not to get staffed with them, keep email receipts and share candid upward reviews on it.

How do you handle an AM of 3.8 yrs experience while you have 5-6-7 years of experience and AM role. I want to understand how you maintain a safe distance, lead team effectively yet also prepare self for yearly appraisal.

I started a new job 4 months ago. Have gotten lots of positive feedback. They keep increasing my workload, I am now 200% allocated so I flagged this with my boss before the break who was very receptive and said would get me help. Fast forward to me following up and it’s a completely different story - I am apparently taking too long on things. This shook me. We are going to talk more this week. Advice?

Is there a corporate way to bring up to senior leaders that an IC is causing issues across multiple teams because they are demanding and also doesn’t collaborate well? The IC gives vague “direction” then says they are too busy to clarify. They also refuse to use our project management/ collaboration tools.

While de-escalating a situation or dealing with a child having an outburst I tend to notice outside coworkers coming in my room to offer help or just check in. I find this doesn’t help it actually makes the situation worse. Would it be rude of me to send out an email asking them not to interrupt since it can make the situation work. I know most of the time it’s cause they are being nosy.

I’m a new associate working for a well-known defense attorney in my state. On one hand, I’m thankful for the opportunity to learn from one of the best, but he also excoriates and belittles me for my mistakes. Any advice on how much it tolerable? I am here to learn and advance my career but he can be pretty nasty. (My mistakes are no worse than you’d expect a 1st year associate to make, in case you’re all wondering if I’m a major screw-up who deserves it) I leave work feeling a foot tall.

My coworker brought a puppy to work, who bit my hand. I ended up losing my temper and yelling at them. Now everyone is mad at me for blowing up at work, even though this is something I shouldn't have had to deal with in the first place!

I’m feeling very sad. I just learned that the partner in my previous firm got fired. I considered him my mentor. He took me under his wing. He was my Don Draper and I was his Peggy Olson. I’m really bummed about this, heartbroken and worried. Nobody knows why. The ex-colleague said everything was normal, they sent him emails but bounced back. Nobody saw it coming. 😢

I’ve completed the first interview with the hiring manager and a colleague, and have been fortunate to get to the next stage but im unsure how to prepare. But I don’t want to fail at the last hurdle as I really like this company and it would be a dream to work there any support or guidance would be greatly appreciated.
