Senior and manager told me to work on something for the client but to not charge my time... this work is a good 2 days worth. Wtf do I charge it to then and is this going to affect my utilization? BS😠

CC your CEO.

Send them an email, and cc HR and your partner. “I want to follow up on our discussion from earlier. You’ve asked me to do this client work and I’m estimating it could take 2 days. I’m not sure how I should charge my time since you told me not to charge the code. Is this not considered chargeable work (include description of work)?” That’s what I’ve done in the past once because they wanted me to work for 2-3 weeks and not charge the time. Everything was fine after that.

definitely don’t CC HR/Partner, that’s a really bad idea.

definitely email them like others have suggested to confirm/have evidence.

like

Don't think you need to CC anyone. Send an email to "confirm" as above said. However, if they still ask you not to charge the time, in an email, contact your ethics line and that's it.
If they are half way smart, they will know that your email is documentation of their request, not confirmation.

likesmart

Charge the time. Put in comments exactly what you did and if they really don’t want you to put that time in you can take it out by there’s a record of your time worked and then telling you to eat it

CCing HR and the partner on email #1 is so aggressive 😬

like

I agree with Crowe 1. Just a note to the person is enough. It’s likely they will not respond in writing, so word yours carefully. “So, just to confirm, you don’t want me to charge this time to the client code, correct? Where, then, should I charge the time, to make sure it’s reflected in my statistics?” Keep it open and light, and see what happens. Then charge the time to the client code anyway, because that’s where it’s supposed to be. How can we figure out how many people we need, or how much we should charge a client, if we don’t know how much time was needed? ??

likesmart

The point of cc’ing them is so HR and Partner can step in and address the issue. If you just email them alone, they will only tell you when they said originally which was to eat time. cc’ing the partner and HR is a lifeline for them to save their own ass and say “No you miss understood def charge your time” because if you don’t cc them and they tell you to eat time again and then you talk to the partner or HR it’s much worse for them at that point. I’ve heard of managers being terminated for that.

Charge it and have them deal with it. I’m a manager and that’s bullshit

like

I don’t know, I cc’d HR and my partner and it worked out for me fine. Think about it. If you don’t and they tell you the same thing then you have to report them to the ethics hotline and they will be penalized, maybe even fired, then your partner will be pissed that the engagement is down 2 people. By cc’ing at least the partner on the email either gives the partner the opportunity to intervene and avoid that or gives the opportunity to the managers to say “no def charge your time you misunderstood us”. Both are better outcomes. After I sent my email, 20 mins later they replied and told me to charge my time. Then the partner wanted to see me and he thanked me for brining this to his attention. I still work with those managers and we get along great.

likehelpful

Tell them no and push back. Inform them you will be charging your time as is required. If they have a concern with that they can elevate it. They are in the wrong and you need to get comfortable with telling your manager no when they are wrong. Be direct.

like

Maybe the partner already knows they would be doing that “for free” and even approved because they want to invest in the relationship with the client. I would email the manager to “confirm” in which job you should charge your hours, if he ends up not giving you a code anyways, and say you should not charge it, save the email and talk to your coach/PM just so they are aware of what happened? It worked for me, but is always good to consider the person you are dealing with...

like

Ask them where to charge your time. Call your relationship leader and fill them in

like

Ask them for another chargeable code you can use

like

Wtf - definitely send an email to them as evidence so they can pull back and charge the time. If they’re not billing the client they can write it off.

like

Senior consultant 1 - even if the work isn’t necessarily being billed to the client (working on the relationship) that doesn’t mean the staff can’t charge their time. Mgmt allocates what gets billed to the client. The utilization of the staff shouldn’t take a hit for that

like

Also, if you’re sure it’s definitely chargeable work, I would email just the manger to “confirm” but point out why it’s chargeable work, and ask them to help you understand why it’s not...that’ll back them into a corner if it’s really chargeable. That worked for me before. Manager tried to say I couldn’t charge time because the task “should have been done already” and I was like “....okay, but it wasn’t because you said at the time it wasn’t a priority. If it was chargeable then, why isn’t it now? Just want to understand why it would make a difference.” He came back and said to charge all the time 🙄🙄

like

Charge the time. They’re just being lazy as they don’t want to deal with overruns properly

Now 8/10 teammates have switched within < 1 year of project start (6-7 months with him) which tbh had good work in our opinion and even team was fun to work with even though none of us ever met in person.
