Senior associate here. Went on my first summer lunch yesterday, and the junior associates were giving out terrible advice and talking out of their asses. Should I tell them to tone it down?

I also want the tea. But in response to your question I would probably take the juniors out and do a little mentoring. There is an issue with them popping off with the summers but the underlying problem seems to be that they themselves actually believe they were giving good advice.

like

This. Remember also that the experiences of juniors that started in or shortly before the pandemic are very different than yours were, and perspectives are shifting.

like

Honestly it depends what the summers are looking for too. Like I’m guessing if the juniors are giving this advice, it’s also what they realistically do and they haven’t got fired yet. So if the summers question is “what’s the bare minimum I can do to not get fired as a junior” they’ll probably be fine. If the summers question is “what does it take to be the A+ associate that can last at this firm long term and become a senior and eventually partner” then they’re getting bad advice.

Hopefully the summers are not already in checked out looking for next job mode but who knows these days.

I find the quality/dedication of seniors vs juniors is v different just due to self selection - people that hate biglaw/aren’t cut out for it end up leaving early on. People that last to become seniors/partners are the ones that take the job real seriously and then we expect that juniors will be like we were as juniors… but only v few are.

People give stats like only 10% of associates make partner but it’s not like the other 90% are being brutally fired every year - they just leave on their own because it’s not for them.

No just retweet it here please

I have never been told to lie for recruiting purposes but there is an implied expectation that we are not supposed to trash the firm

We need specific examples.

I think generally this kind of advice is meant to be for when the summers become juniors, not just for their summer. Of course summers aren’t supposed to be calling up clients and proactively doing a bunch of unasked for work during their summer, but I doubt that’s the context this was in.

like

And you too were not once an idiot junior associate talking out of your ass and making shit up as you went along? Or were you the magic one who knew it all from day 1. Chill out, just stick your head in their office and tell them to chill as well, I’m sure their intentions are benevolent.

Haha yep me too

Yeah, in this post. Proceed

Just leave it alone. Summers are too drunk to remember any of the bullshit a first year tells them.

::climbs that bandwagon for specific examples:: sheesh, I’m out of shape. But yeah, need specifics.

Do these juniors act on their own advice?

like

You’re a senior associate, yes you can tell them to tone it down. At the same time, if I were you I’d also tell whoever they gave advice to take everything everyone says with a grain of salt.

This advice isn’t really great. What do you hope to accomplish by talking to the other associates?

Sales assistant at a drug/grocery store. I have a direct report who is smart, passionate about her job and can be really innovative. However she carries this enormous weight of responsibility, for needing to do everything, do it right, make sure it's perfect, not trusting colleagues to help. It creates dread and panic and overwhelming workload and a terrible attitude for her and I am speaking with her this week to start to shift her mindset. Any tips in navigating how to let go of this heavy idea of "responsibility"?

Man this Bowl is filled with some angry mid-levels. We get it, this job was hard for you, but it is for juniors now, too. Stop punching down.

I don’t think the juniors are entitled, they just want to share in their firms’ wealth. Surely any salary increases for the Classes of 2019, 2020, and 2021 would easily pay for themselves through billable hours.
