And some of our Black folks in leadership position are hesitant to hire their own when in a predominantly white organization for fear of how it will reflect on them. Another result of oppression Meanwhile our white peers practice nepotism like no other and are proud of it.

I love this post! They need to use their voice and advocate for our face! Demand for things to change and push back on the silent but known systematic racism that exists in these firms! Now is the time to really get more black people into more opportunities!

Let's not rush to assume that they're not trying. Maybe not all black partners are trying as hard as they perhaps could, but let's not accidentally blast the ones who are trying. They have sales targets, families and other things to handle, and they have to get past the fact that there are so few of them in such a big organization. Maybe imagine how much worse things might be if their small scale efforts didn't exist.

M2 it's really not that hard to show some effort though. I get that not everyone has the same amount of time, clout, or desire to help in all areas. But you're telling me as a black person who is well aware of the systematic issues, they can't take an hour a month to mentor ONE person. Or use their ditect access to senior leadership to push ONE issue? Come on now. And tbh, if thwy have a family they should be hustling as much as they can to make this a better world for theirr kids. Unless they want their kids to have the same damn struggles a generation later.

I can only tell you all my experience. White approval is driven by your ability to make it rain, which is more about clients than internal politics. If you can do that, you can do whatever you want. No one messes with someone who brings money in the door, which is why, at my firm at least, the black leaders who put up numbers are the ones who are leading the charge for change. I’m surprised to hear that isn’t happening elsewhere. I will say that we don’t do as good a job of advertising it broadly as we should (new area of focus for us), but I will also tell you I know there are a lot of other (white) partners who aren’t happy about it (calling it virtue signaling, saying we should be focused on growth and not social issues, blahblahblah). Can’t stop us though.

Facts! Many who rise to those positions had to appease many white people to get and stay there and I doubt that being pro-black people fits into the company “white culture” very well.

OP, don’t assume no one is speaking up or that anyone is afraid of losing power. I know for a fact that the same thing that Deloitte4 mentioned has been happening for at least the last 4 years. I’ve been involved in some of those discussions.

Stop being defensive. If I don’t know whatever y’all doing then that’s YALL fault for not communicating. Speak up and help us get true equity. Period. It’s not that deep.

They can't do much. Even Obama couldn't do much. It's an entire organization. They are few token trying to survive. Being a partner is very challenging.

Can you negotiate your time in the company? What I mean is say 401k vesting / matching happens in two year or vacation increases a week for someone with 3 years can I be credited with a year served in the system so that I can vest faster. I understand everything is in a system, so can they do a plus one to my count? I am doing this in case they come in at the low end of salary and can't raise salary. Trying to think of non monetary low monetary benefits to close gap

Opinion: firms without lockstep comp advertise it as a benefit ("we reward merit!"), but actually do it so they don't have to broadcast that no one gets as much a raise as those with lockstep raises.

Was at an event recently. Seems like advertising really only cares about diversity as it applies to white women. I think this industry wants to stay white.

On a call with the CEO talking about diversity and they compare a person with tattoos experiencing prejudice in the office to Black people colleague experiences... Meanwhile last I checked, a tattoo was a choice and removable. Also depending on placement, you can’t see it.

Currently talking to recruiters for a new job and it is honestly such a turnoff when they talk too much about having a strong company culture and/or talking about making sure I'm a good fit culturally. For me that borders on culty and is a red flag. I would much rather hear from a recruiter that a workplace's "culture" is that they are accepting of all cultures, diversity, and personality types.

Anyone who had COVID or pretty sure they had COVID, have you noticed any strange symptoms long after the initial sickness? I exhibited all symptoms in late March for ~10 days and recovered. Since then, I’ve had a few weird 1 day fevers and occasional stomach issues, latest in August. Wanted to see if anyone else had similar experiences.
