I didn’t choose public, it choose me.
The flexibility is everything. I’ve also found that the caliber of people I work with in public is, on average, higher than those in industry.
Never knew it, I just kept on going and still here
Flexibility is too good to give up
As a counter point - hitting senior manager and really taking a hard look at the path to partner and the reality of my life for my partner friends has crystallized that I’m not here for the long haul
Flexibility starts kicking in around manager.
Going private and realized I was not consistently challenged.
Take it one busy season at a time. New challenges and leadership opportunities each year. I get to have a lot of say in how my jobs are completed. The flexibility to work from home on occasion is nice too.
Agree with EY2 - never really thought about it, just is.... the one time I really wanted to get out into industry didn’t work out because 9/11 happened while I was in the process. What has kept me in PA is most importantly the flexibility! Then there is the fear of the unknown after so many years... and the fear of boredom - you get used to the craziness after 20 years 🤷♀️
What is this flexibility that all you higher ups speak of? I commute 3 hours a day roundtrip, 5 days a week.
EY3 typically it kicks in around Manager level and up. You have earned the ability to be more in charge of your own day in my experience. Granted when there are meetings or onsite client needs obviously you need to go, but I have the flexibility to make most of, if not all of my kids events, I make doctors appointments when it is convenient for me, if I need to do something - I go do it and make up the time later, and the ability to work from home sometimes is truly a gift, just don’t abuse it. You don't get to manager or senior manager without proving you can get the job done, so there is a level of trust and some leeway your partners should be giving you.

I am a glutton for punishment I guess. All kidding aside, as a senior manager, I agree with the others, the flexibility a lot of the year makes the busy season(s) worth it. Also, it’s really the audit engagement structure/environment that keeps me here. I like working with younger staff and training and developing. There is something rewarding about bringing up people behind you. I feel like a lot of what I love is unique to public accounting.
