Helpful- thanks!
Really depends on location and company. If you are in the Bay Area that’s where you’ll see highest base comp. I haven’t seen any base close to 395k but I’ve seen total company above 300k (usually for senior counsel+ positions).
Based on my non scientific search of around 10-15 data points. Lots of positions in the low 200s, very few in the 300s, and virtually nothing in the 400s. Also these numbers include target bonuses. If you go FAANG you've got a decent shot at the 300s but it's mostly in the bay area or Seattle. Places that offer "remote" pay less, sometimes a lot less.
One thing I would note is that in house wants other in house people, preferably that worked at a company very similar to their own. So if you're coming from a law firm with 8 years of experience they may try to treat you like. 4-5th from from a comp perspective, but this varies a lot.
If you're not super hating where you are at, consider what the forgone income would do to your plans from a discounted cash flow perspective. Just my 2 cents. Getting paid half as much probably means your net worth will grow at leas than half the current rate, which is definitely something to consider. Also the job security in house isn't always better or even as good as big law.
How can I switch from other areas of law to privacy? Thanks!
Did you talk about the total comp or just base? Thanks!
