This is a roundabout way of telling you to eat hours.

like

Do not eat hours. Say "I guess I have to learn the forms better "

like

Tell your senior she is an idiot

like

Yeah, it sounds like you two both need to do a better job on communicating what expectations are up front. Staff and Seniors run into this all the time. Where she is asking you to spend extra time, CYA and explicitly talk about the time this is taking. Also, if you are focused on "blame" you are doing it wrong.

like

This is the kind of stuff that annoys me about PA. There should be a "I spent half of the time learning while working on this" code. Allow the staff to get recognized for the hours/effort spent without blowing up the budget. I've "eaten" hours going over new clients prior year workpapers in the winter to learn but it shouldn't be like that.

like

I am mot saying to eat hours. I am saying this is a sneaky way of telling someone to eat hours. OP.. when they ask say, as per my senior, i had to spend more time on 1120s & the schedules. I did as i was told and put in my hours since i was told not to eat hours.

like

I tell the staff on my engagements to make sure they know how much time is expected per task they are assigned. Maybe she expected you to spend 4 and you spent 8?

like

She wasn't specific. I have 20 hours for the client this week. After today, I have 25. But she is also to blame I feel. First off, she told me to spend time looking at PY along with PY workpapers to see how everything was inputted. Ok. Then I had to fix errors on CY workpapers + make sure all the appropriate boxes were checked/updated + do one schedule at a time + have her go over said schedule with me before the next one. In between all that, if I didn't understand something, she would tell me to go back to my table and carefully look at everything and try it again to make sense of it. The hours truly add up when I'm "wasting time" rather than her "giving me answers". I mean I liked that she wanted me to learn, but hate that she yelled at me for following her instructions. Like uh what? So yeah, it was easy reaching that 20 hours if you count all the dancing around we did for each schedule

like

I get that.. but sometimes seniors forget the hell they went through. They start to feel their time is more valuable and quickly go to the you figure it out. I can justify the "go back and see what you did wrong" when there is not a deadline. But if your staff is not understanding after a second go, that is when you need to sit with them and show them. Chances are that a. Something is going over their heads or b. You as a senior, are not communicating something clearly.

like

Yeah - if she told you explicitly to spin your wheels she definitely handled that poorly and has no room to get frustrated with you over 5 hours extra time.

like

When the budget is tight, my senior explicitly asks me to put those *learning* hours into the tech learning code.

like

I just don't get why she would tell me to spend additional time on learning the 1120s and the supporting schedules then yell at me for charging so much... so contradicting. I actually wanted to learn them better and used the time comparing PY to CY, even made notes. Are all/most seniors like this? How should I communicate with them if this happens again?

I'm not trying to play the blame game here. But you need to understand that this is what she communicated to me and I did as she said. Spend MORE time on the client. And I kept going to her after the second go if I truly could not figure it out because I felt I was wasting time. And I told her that. Her response? "That's how you learn! Sometimes you have to spin your wheels!" Next time I will definitely ask how much is "spend more time"

I'm afraid she'll report me if I tell her I think she's an idiot 😂 but I will remind her of what she said if this happens again

OP be more efficient.

@EY 3 how can I be more efficient?

@Tax senior associate 1 I completely agree!! They even told us when it gets slow after busy season to review PY stuff and what we just did to really learn it all. I'm afraid that will eat up hours and I'll get in trouble for it once again...

@EY 4 I don't think we have a code like that?

I recently interviewed for a client-side marketing manager role with a global company. I’ve been engaged with the company for over a year and built a network of internal advocates. One of my internal contacts was the hiring manager who promised to do whatever she could to help me get hired. The position was on her team and she told me to apply. After five interviews I was not selected although I met all of requirements and more. I’ve yet to from her as to why. Would you fight this?
