Worth following up on, but the market is slow. Not a good time to be lateraling.
Yeah GS is rumored to have mass layoffs later this week because deal flow is so down
Firm dependent but one biglaw firm took a month before reaching out about interviewing me. Interview process and conflicts took several months. I’ve also had an offer from another biglaw firm within a week of applying. Just depends on needs, how busy/available the interviewers/HR people are, the market for your level/practice area, and your qualifications. If you applied directly through the online portal, following up is likely unnecessary. If you applied through a recruiter or referral, then by all means follow up. Good luck.
Do NOT follow up, Hon. That way lies depression. If you are using a headhunter, then let the headhunter make any follow up calls or prodding or let you know. Either way, if there is action on your application, you’ll receive word. Yes, I really do know how hard that is to hear and live by. As attorney who swiftly became one of her firm’s recruiters, please trust me that there is a fairly rigid process that your primary contact and interviewers at the firm must follow. That process is fairly easy to set out for you if you have applied as a summer associate or for a position immediately following graduation up to about your 3rd year.
You didn’t tell us what level you are applying for and by what means. Yes, paper is STILL accepted (grin). How else can we write on it?!
There are countless positions open at every level on every site I see. Poke around, think about them, then tap how your gut feels about each, then apply. Unless a cover letter is requested or required, don’t waste time agonizing over one. Just specify the position for which you are applying. The attorney reviewers get the stack of resumes with the cover letters ripped off (presumably shredded) unless a letter is both particularly well written and relevant. I’ve seen 2 — EVER.
We have all known the dismal feelings associated with perceived rejection, silence in the face of an overture. None of us can know what strangers truly want & need or what internal pressures may be compressing what had been posted as a position opening. When you can reach the point that you don’t try to guess, meet, or “own” unknown expectations or needs, you set yourself free to walker a breezier, buoyant path. It’s hard, but not as hard as what you are putting yourself through. Good luck!
Post what firms and ask for an in from someone on fishbowl. That way they actually look at your application and the associate can get the referral bonus if it works out!
Sometimes firms just hold onto your resume without a rejection if it’s not 100% what they’re looking for but think you’re otherwise a good candidate. Then they’ll reach out months later for a different position or a new opening.
Chief
Always assume it’s a rejection and move on
Market is really slowing down.
