Serious billing question - if during the course of the day, you first receive an email from Client A at say 11:10am and you read it, you then respond to it at 12:20pm. You get another email at 2pm from Client A and respond immediately. The next email comes in at 4pm, you read it and respond only at 4:30pm. None of the email responses take more than 3-5mins. You are working on matters for other clients at all other times during the day. How much are you billing for Client A?

.2 or .3 if it’s part of an ongoing deal; otherwise I take the long term view to build a relationship with the client and become their go to for trusted advice (same answer if this is an internal referral and another partner is the “client”). Then I don’t bill and I find a comfortable way to tell them that. I don’t want .2 billable hours; I’m hunting for a 4,000 hour problem to solve.

likeuplifting

0.3-0.5 depending on the complexity of the matter. If simple answers then 0.3.

likefunny

Is this "value billing"?

I’d do 0.5, cause it distracts me from work I could be doing on another project, so i may have worked 0.3, but I “lost” 0.5.

Probably either .1 or .2

Sounds like 12-15 mins of work. We bill in tenths so I would bill .2.

Not sure how one honestly gets to .6.

I wouldn’t round 15 mins to a half hour under any circumstances. Just don’t know how you get there honestly and I want clients to over communicate with me, which they won’t do if I nickel and dime them. But to your point bright lines are elusive. P1 has the right perspective.

You should bill your actual time, which sounds like .3 max. If you had to think through the issues before responding and that adds to your time, okay.

If I were your client, and that's the only work you did for me that day, I may take a closer look at a .5 billing entry for responding to emails (bc it would seem obviously high, depending on the nature of the emails). And if it looks like you're cheating on that, I'd assume you were cheating on something else and may want to move you off my cases.

After 7 years in this field, I realized that the more I work the more my bosses give me more work and ask me to go beyond my limits. When I finish a job they say is great (after weeks criticizing it), but when I use the same/similar project/model for another client, they basically say that that version is not good/its cr@p (the same version they praised before). In January I made a report of 80 pages. Now, 4 months, is already reaching 150 pages because they keep asking me for more and more.
