I have BCG on my resume and it opened zero doors. It isn’t the brands, it’s the networking. In fact having MBB on it could close doors depending on the industry you want to enter.
B5, I think all BCG1 is trying to say is that without some effort, work, and humbleness, great opportunities wont come.
As others have said, I think something else is going on there if you weren’t getting interviews in b-school. I’ve left BCG and joined a tech company. I definitely get more excited about candidates who worked at MBB, but just extended an offer to someone who now works as an IBM consultant over someone at BCG because the IBM consultant came off better in interviews.
Helpful answer. Prior to moving into consulting, I hired consultants from many firms.
Experience and fit almost always outweighed firm name.
D on my resume opened a lot of doors for me
Coach
And to the people laughing about how D opened a lot of doors. Not kind. It did. I have actually signed paperwork for a new job and just haven’t updated linkedin yet. I wasn’t planning for it to open as many as it did. It is what you do with your time there that counts
At least people recognize your company.
Many recruiter are scum of the earth
Triggered easily BGC!
Coach
If you have an M7 MBA, but D wouldn't interview you until 2 years post-MBA, something else is going wrong. I only worked at a no name small company that no longer exists, but got interviews with MBB, tier 2 and big 4 firms during my M7 MBA program.
But back to your original question, you don't NEED MBB or a big brand on your resume, but those things definitely help. Think of it like your M7 MBA. It helps differentiate you from 90% of people, but it doesn't mean you can walk right in to the job of your choice. It also depends on role. The fancy biz ops jobs might be almost all MBB, but that doesn't reflect most F100 roles, where they still need people as marketing mangers, program managers, finance analysts, supply chain experts, and whatever else.
No not if you network
Honestly you seem really annoying. So maybe it’s that?
Coach
The F100 hire folks from all sorts of consulting firms, MBB on the resume is 100% not necessary
Do you struggle with self-doubt? Your negative tonality (e.g. wouldn’t be surprised if, no amount of, apparently [I am] damn[ed], etc) suggest you might put too much weight on what others say and their opinion of you, your past, and your future.
If you’re going to believe something, believe that are enough to forge your own path, no matter your background.
My developer friends at Google have associates degree from community college. I don’t have an MBA and have received offers from top companies with my D experience, and interviews with McKinsey and Google. I think you have to put your ego to the side, and take a look at how you present yourself and how you come across in interviews. I’m still laughing at any recruiter who would tell you Deloitte is not a top brand when we have so many alumni that work at FAANG. That’s not the issue you’re not getting interviews.
F100s employ millions of people. Not that it matters but probably “more” deloitte than mbb just because there are more deloitte alumni to begin with. What kind of roles are you considering “good”?
Same boat as you, top MBA, ended up at D. Left for a Director role in strategy for a major global company. No damage here. Network and you're fine.
I can immediately think of 3 people I know at a big FAANG.
One from Deloitte, one from LEK and one from McKinsey.
Its all about networking, and your case work experience at whatever firm you were at and is that transferable to the FAANG.
Yes, MBB opens a few more doors at the upper end of the career search spectrum, but anyone from an MBB or top tier 2 are going to be in the mix for things most people have no shot at getting.
Even me? Nah
I have a bunch of friends at FANG without MBB. Don't sweat it.
Most of them went to state schools and *gasp* a non-m7 MBA.
I know 25 people at Amazon alone (I was kind of shocked by this). And another 20 across the rest of FANG. Your current employer and MBA are not what is holding you back.
I’ve been with PwC two years and have a FAANG final round coming up in a few days, so no, you don’t *need* MBB.
But I’m sure it helps!
MBB is only a thing within professional services. I started out at Deloitte and have found that everyone knows Deloitte but lots have never heard of BCG...

Bcg2 - what flavor koolaid you drinking today?
Mentor
Not sure if that’s the case. That said, it certainly helps. What do you want to exit to?
Mentor
I wouldn’t say you “need it for good exits.” I’d say it opens some different doors (and some of the some ones).
Knock knock
What kind of role/level are you looking at?
