I think we need to strongly start considering an amicable divorce.
Right now there is zero incentive for states like California and New York to remain in the union.
Yeah zero incentive is hyperbole.
But it would probably look alot like Brexit but over a longer time span, with states doing referendums on whichbway they want to go.
Probably with a lot of negotiation on trade deals, potentially trading land to keep blue states contiguous, and establishing an alimony for Red States until they can support themselves
Will never happen. Blue states fund red states.
It’s called the balance of payments for federal taxes which under writes both government and individual dependency. The notion that states tax themselves and carry their own is false. This is my biggest frustration with Republicans. Don’t say pick yourself up by your boot straps then lobby for significant handouts. Show everyone how it is done. Remember how the NY Governor laid it into Mitch McConnell regarding Kentucky and bailouts?
Read an interesting Covid article that talked about how the red states want the blues open to fund federal taxes. Most red states don’t have nearly as many people and have larger land sizes/less people density, which naturally promotes social distancing.

Not going to happen.
Imagine what we could accomplish if we weren't funding the red states.

It makes a ton of sense to keep the union, partisanship doesn’t really discount that. Remember we’ve literally had a President resign and be pardoned by his successor for literally stealing from his political opponents. And I think the Civil War kind of showed that there will never be a peaceful secession in this country. I think there’s even debate if secession is constitutional but obviously that’s a weird argument for several reasons.

Cut the cord and let them go. We’ll keep our tax dollars.

I live in a red state and work for a booming tech company in a blue state! There are plenty of folks in my same situation. This couldn’t happen!

Move to blue state or you will need a H1B visa like other aliens.

Isn't the purpose of states there for this very reason. Is there anything stopping Cali from UBI, medicare for all or anything else. Then other states don't have to do that if they don't want to.
Does it have to be the whole country or nothing?

I'm not exactly following PwC1. It sounds like your saying that california can't have some form of socialized medicine because it can't manage the demand against and unknown and unregulated supply of people, because people can move in and out from other states at will. And therefore the state can't manage it. But it is late so I might be missing something.
If I'm understanding you correctly then I would say the state should just set laws in the state of California about state residency requirements for health care. Isn't that similar to how in state tuition works at state universities. Not a perfect comparison but the ideas is similar.
I guess said another way Cali may not be able to regulate people moving in and out but it can set policy for eligibility of participation in the system.

We will have a Haiti and Dominican Republican situation
I... actually agree.
