Question: would partners and SMs make good analysts now if they hypothetically had to fill that role? Flip side: can you tell from performance of junior staff if they'd make good SMs or partners?

I can say yes for myself and a few other partners I know — I am very close to execution and still direct/check (and sometimes do) core analysis. Most partners would be not be good analysts, though.

If they rose through the ranks, I would think so. Though they might be a tad rusty, SMs should know enough about the details in order to help develop staff. Honestly I would expect most do a good job assuming they no longer have to balance responsibilities. Right now they have their heads divided by x100 different things, but if you got them all on an engagement where this is their one job they should smash it

I know partners that fire up excel at home in the weekend, to do some data analysis to help out the team just for fun and I know partners that only work from their iPad as reviewing is the only thing they do all day.

like

Are you asking because you are at the beginning of your career as an analyst and want to know if you have what it takes to make it to partner?

funny

Nope, in the middle and leaving soon

My partner literally did actual execution work for us last weekend so we didn’t have to because we had been working crazy hours. He sat there fiddling around in excel and MS project for 3 hours on a Sunday. He’s super close to the work all the time but he’s also very technical so that might be why.

like

I rolled myself off of a project once when the partner was faster/better at PowerPoint than I was. Told him I no longer had any value add.

like

Lol. For that particular project that’s what they needed. I wasn’t down with that. To be real. It’s because it was nothing I was interested in and the project was running 24/7 straight through weekends and holidays. Eff that.

.

As an SM spent 3 days straight hands on the keyboard coding and troubleshooting a solution for my team (and loved doing more handson work again btw). I’m pretty sure there are people that can still go back to doing this. With regard to whether you can tell, to be frank I think you can tell whether people outperform their peers. Whether or not that makes you a good P or SM is different. These things you will only be able to tell when people get closer to that role.

My company has given me a promotion without a raise. Any suggestions on how to deal with this? Little background: Asked for promotion in late 2020 - was required to skill up, after skilling up, asked again about when I'll be promoted and was denied because there is no "vacancy" for it. Got my annual hike in Oct 2021 without the promotion. I asked HR last week again and got a random announcement email saying my promotion is w.e.f Oct 2021. ( and no raise for the newly promoted role).

I'm a younger plaintiff's side attorney (31). Does anyone else feel like white attorneys give you a particularly harder time? Like unreasonably denying clear facts, or trying to fish for a way to sanction you? Usually it's solo defense attorneys that get extreme with it, but I've seen some questionable stuff from BigLaw too. Hopefully I'm not the only one.
