Like other professions, we have organizations to protect our wages by making the barriers to entry high and to advocate for our interests with the politicians. As for bargaining with the owners, that has a very different relationship in a partnership than a corporation. So what would this union of yours have to do?

like

Unions are like big government. One more hand in the cookie jar. If you feel overworked and underpaid, they can take care of one of those problems. But usually production workers are unionized and management isn't. How do you draw that line in accounting? And who wants to pay $400 a month in union dues? Not me.

I think since the entire industry is based on talent, it is very feasible. We could probably improve busy season hours if we did start one. Let me know where to sign up!

Lol they can certainly be unionzed. Most countries besides the US have white collar unions. They're just unnecessary. We already have a good amount of bargaining power, pay, benefits, (look at the escalation of pay and benefits over the years, especially in tech), safety, and security. Plus negotiating contracts would be an absolute nightmare considering the differing salaries, specialization, and experience. No one wants to do it, otherwise it would have been done. Blue collar jobs are replaceable, have streamlined pay structures, and historically were treated like crap, underpaid, and unsafe. That's why they fought like hell to organize. FYI we do not have tough work conditions

like

Unions have historically been a blue collar thing. Professional Associations, like the AICPA, kind of serve in that role for white collar fields. The AICPA isn't going to fight for higher wages for us, but they will ensure our certification stays valuable.

like

The fees. Seriously it would change so much, not just the hours, and not for the good. Haven't seen any profession unionized. Plus it's just a Lib idea

like

Have you seen our education system?

like

Ask anyone in a union how much the fees suck and how little the actually do for you. Also, I'm not sure how this industry is based on "talent" when there's an endless supply of people willing to takeover for us. Besides, big 4 has endless resources so doubtful we could ever compete with them financially.

like

people at public accounting have alternatives to jump into industry, so there's no urgency to form union.

like

You get made like a mob boss

like

Public Accounting has an off balance sheet deferred compensation plan. It pays out when you make partner. If you don't make partner, it's lost. It's what should incentivize us to work as hard as we do.

like

How would the transition to partner work?

like

The AICPA seems to only exist to make up new certifications that lack value/devalue the CPA (PFP cert, ABV, etc.) and tell me how the CPA pipeline is not filled with enough talent.

like

Just what we need. Some union fat cats living off our paychecks. Learn how to negotiate for yourself. This isn't 1930.

like

^agreed, nice response. When I said can't be unionized, I didn't mean it in a factual way. I meant in a practical way.

like

we should start unionizing by anonymous sign up and announce after achieving certain %. for those of you who do not know the history of labor fights, lawyers were not paid as much as they are today decades ago but they fought.

like

^ those are literally opposite sentiments.

Looking for a UI designer in NYC to start Tue on site in Union Square. Comfortable in Figma, 70/hr, 2 week gig to start, in-house design team at D2C health startup.

I am newly in a wheelchair and am unable to find clear information on the ADA website about what my job is required to do. I’ve talked with my Union Rep and they are checking. I’m requesting to be on a 504 plan, but I have no idea if they are required to add handicapped entrances or not. I know I have to scan my badge to use the button, but trying to scan my badge, open the door, and not drop anything seems a bit unattainable to me at the moment. Anyone have some insight or dealt with this?
