Seriously though, can you guys in the US please explain to me (A Brit) why the hell people in your country don't want universal healthcare like our NHS? Please?

^ on top earners, the rate is 45% and peaks at 57%. if you read the studies from the independent UK institute for fiscal studies, it conservatively estimates the peak to range between 66% -75% range.

Yes, I was referring to the Laffer curve. I agree the rate-revenue relationship drives the inflection point and steepness. If you studied the curve in greater detail however, you would be familiar with the Romer and Romer UB Berkeley study. The study determined the point at approx 33%. I might add this was a study conducted by the leftist UCB. Also, Christina Romer was the former chair of Obamas council of economic advisers.

How does it work? Those who work pay for those who don't want to work?

like

What are you talking about OP?! NHS is a mess and failing. 1) medical and dental care rationing 2) subpar treatment 3) long wait times 4) raising rates of coverups by hospital admins in wrongful death cases. Peruse any number of recent studies published by the London School of hygiene and tropical medicine. One recent, damning comprehensive survey uncovered 1 out of every 28 patients die unnecessarily due to poor care at the hands of drs, allied practitioners and health admins at the NHS. That's inexcusable. Net net: Socialized medicine kills.

like

In the U.S., anything run by the government is slower, less efficient and costs more. This applies to everything they touch.

like

^Once again, "misinterpreted VP2" decides to grace a post with his/her elementary pedantry and poor reasoning.

It's called Freedom of speech. Not "freedom of safe spaces" 🇺🇸

like

^if you took the time to research the case I referenced, you would find it easily. "Socialized medicine only fails when it is underfunded "? Wrong! It fails for the reasons listed above and more. It also fails because there is a limit to how government revenue is allocated. Where do you think the government gets its funding? From taxes. There is a point on the curve where too much taxation reduces government revenue . Do you know where that point lies? 33%. Any idea where the U.K. Personal tax rates reside? Well above 60%.
With a country as small as Britain, there is no excuse for the low quality of care. If you can't get your system right, you have no business lecturing us to adopt it. In a country as economically, geographically, and demographically diverse as the US, socialized medicine would be a public policy disaster. Obamacare already is.

like

The fact that universal healthcare works in other countries does not mean it will work in US. This country is full of obese, lazy, entitled people. Ergo, significantly higher healthcare costs.

like

@VP1 All due respect, socialised medicine only fails when it's underfunded, as it has been recently. I've had a look for your "1 in 28 patients die unnecessarily" claim and can find no such evidence.
In fact, of 16.252m patients in 2015/16, 1/28 would be 580,000 deaths from malpractice. Given that there were only 520,000 deaths that year of *any cause whatsoever, including not in hospitals* I'd hazard that your numbers are a bit off there.
I did find one study from LSHTM in 2012 suggesting that of deaths in NHS practices, approx 5% were classes as "possibly preventable". This is disappointing, obviously, but on the other hand, a study using data from 2000-2008 in the US suggests that in US hospitals, that rate is about 10%. Which is worse.
And also doesn't include all of the people in the US who get sick and die without getting treatment because they can't afford it. Seriously man, stop making excuses.

like

"Come back to the table with reasoned arguments"? I did, and you ignored them. You haven't even addressed my comment about the rate of preventable death in US hospitals being twice as high as in the UK.
I've also worked in healthcare, as a statistician. Better funding and availability of healthcare improves life expectancy and general public health. Don't take my word for it though, have a look at this comprehensive OECD report about universal healthcare in a whole bunch of countries: https://www.oecd.org/els/health-systems/Universal-Health-Coverage-and-Health-Outcomes-OECD-G7-Health-Ministerial-2016.pdf

@OP - "Better than nothing"? Wrong. It is an unmitigated disaster.

Tax rates and Laffer curves aside, I really don't get why you feel like there is any reasonable argument in saying that leaving people uninsured and without healthcare is in any practical way good for their health. That makes zero sense as a statement.

You ever heard of VA hospitals? The ones where our veterans are treated --- they are run by our VA department which is government... you ever read reports on how our veterans are dying because they can't get medical care and because the care is so shitty? Exactly

like

Last post. You know McCain got a tumor? He could have gotten free care at the VA local hospital. Yet he went to Mayo Clinic... so yes, all of these reasons are why we want nothing to do with socialized care

I think that says more about the management of the VA hospitals than the system.

You can say what you want, but my experience in the UK has been good and at least equal to my experience in the US. In terms of cost, the U.K. is less. Do you live in the US? Have you experienced healthcare anywhere else?

^ Ok, so what we've all concluded is that Americans are incapable of governing themselves. Can you please stop projecting your inefficiencies onto other countries? Leave the NHS alone. Please and thank you.

Received a job offer. Was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on a concern I had about it. It's an entry level position, and I don't have much experience. The billables are 2040 a year. For billable hours in civil litigation and insurance defense, is 2040 hours for a 1st year associate on the high end in this field for a small or midsize firm? It seems like most attorneys I know have minimum requirements of around 1800. The compensation is around 80k a year.

How concerned are you about inflation? We have 70% savings rate and 50% of our expenses are housing / utilities of which the largest part is rent which is a fixed contract (no CPI escalation, no automatic increases, paying same rent for 4 years). No car as we are living in a large city. So if I look at the components of CPI and what’s rising I am feeling pretty „good“ about it. The one thing I am „worried“ is asset inflation but obviously that benefits me directly. What am I missing?

I am asked during this RE analyst interview to build a real estate model from scratch. Do you have model to share?

I’m totally empathetic to people that miss offices and traveling. I understand your reasons why, I truly do.

For me personally, after non-stop weekly travel for 4 straight years, not traveling has made me realize how much I enjoy being home. Spending time with family, sleeping in your own bed, consistent exercise schedule, etc.

I for one hope consulting becomes more of a hybrid travel model (i.e. travel 1-2x per month or as needed). Else it won’t be for me.

Anyways, just some thoughts.
