Seriously what is the time policy at Deloitte?! They tell you to book what you work - then you get on a project where your manager tells you in not so many words to book what the projects budgeted for

If it's a couple of hours your managers asking you to eat...it's okay. But if it's a significant # of hours and will affect your utilization then I'd get your counselor involved.

Bill actuals, don't eat time. Same goes for when they tell you "you don't need to attend that training....I didn't even go to mine". If necessary get the RSSL involved. That usually gets them to change their tune quick.

like

If you have to physically be there for optics or whatever reason...it should be billable. If he says anything about other stuff tell him well if I can leave at say 6 pm then I won't do any non client stuff on site

like

And most of my projects at D we were told bill 45, if you consistently work way over let us know. Usually came from SM or Partner at staffing... I had one project in my entire Deloitte career where I could bill actuals. With the rest we world it out either with PTO or letting management know about extra hours

like

I love the classic CYA "if you consistently.... Let us know" 😂 you already know... you're right here with me week in week out.

If I am physically at a location expected to be working for 12 - 13 hours a day how does one differentiate bw billable and non? His idea was that there is time I'm there doing other stuff. Well quite frankly I'd rather be doing it at my hotel not held hostage here with nowhere to put my time. Idk all very confusing.

OP don't burn bridges over this. I have seen people s careers being stalled because they brought HR in. I would have a candid conversation. It is not uncommon to be working up to 12 hours on site and be charging 9. If this is happening consistently though, I would ask if some weeks u were planning on taking a day off u could do so and still bill the 9. Idk there are definitely ways to bring it up directly with managements. Though if you are fresh out of undergrad you may need to suck it up

@ACN1 I know where you're coming from its always a catch22. Seasoned consultant - different culture at ACN. Not uncommon to put a straight 40 in T&E. At Deloitte though, they emphasize bill what you work so heavily... And then in reality you have situations like this. So was just trying to understand the culture more. This is consistent 12+ hours ramp up, mid project, ramp down. Nothing shuts down before 8 no matter how busy or idle you are.

Everyone puts an emphasis on booking what you work, even my team leadership for the past couple of projects. All traveling hours should be credited to ORT unless you are working on the plane. If you travel during a designated firm holiday, then still book ORT and use it as a floating holiday. If you have work do to but spend 2 hours of your 12 hour day on something else then you need to bill 10. If you have nothing assigned for the project but forced to sit there for 12 hours then I would bill 12 hours. That's an inefficiency on their part.

like

Especially at a firm where those metrics are used to size/staff future deals. Isn't it our duty to book actuals to change the culture of understaffing?!? Also if I am flying in on a holiday I want those hours to count to something it sure as hell wasn't my personal time off.

Glad to see this is NOT normal. Ha no optics involved which is even worse - client works remote most of the time. We're just there to "collaborate" with each other 😡

like

Getting RSSL involved could burn bridges... It's a small project with heavy SM, director involvement. Just a tough spot to make loud cries about it. Def not planning a future staffing opp through this.

OP I was at Deloitte for 3.5 years... I know...

I'm a former Deloitter and they say bill what you work but the reality is they want you to bill what you're budgeted for. If you bill more, there will be a flurry of emails asking you to explain and/or move the difference between actual and budget to the non-billable code. Talk to your engagement manager first.

like

Tricky with a small project...I would let your counselor know but not sure I would personally make waves just yet. I bill 45 every week because I know it averages out in weeks where I'm working less. Everybody's happy.

I have honestly been fortunate to have projects that let us do 8-7 in the office but then expect you to be back on and responsive till 12 ish. I have always been ok with that though as long as I got my gym and dinner time. With that said I feel your pain. Nothing is worse than sitting in the office for ridiculous hours and be idle, but it ll pay off

I’ve been thinking I need to break up with my boyfriend. We’ve just grown apart and I think it’s time for us to go our separate ways. How bad is it that because of covid I’ve been pushing off the conversation with him because I know dating is really hard right now and I don’t want to deal with not being able to date after. How bad is it for me to be thinking this... can anyone else relate? I just feel like I want to be with someone and if I break up with him I won’t have anyone cause of covid
