Have a serious discussion with the manager about what parts of the test work are actually necessary to get sufficient, appropriate audit evidence and what is just rolled forward unnecessary procedures from the perfectionist senior/manager 10 years ago.
You’ll be amazed what work we do that does not provide audit evidence but is just people ticking and tying for funsies.

That’s usually when I employ all the process improvement techniques we’ve been talking about for years but never did. Cut off all the fat. Communicate with other teams about your situation.
Prioritize your tasks (ask your manager for help if not sure), and communicate to your manager your status so they clearly know whether the team is overall on track to meet deadlines (I.e., so they know how urgent the need is to bring on another person). Otherwise just do your best in the time you’re willing to give, and you’ll be fine.
EY1 is onto something regarding “the time you’re willing to give.” That’s a real thing these days with WFH. Probably a good thing for the associates and senior associates and forces accountability to managers and above to actually staff jobs well. It’s a challenge though.
