Sf native. Just need to know where not to be and avoid obvious places at night. All this pretty standard for major cities. Car breakins are a really problem tho.
Moved this year from NYC. Don’t walk a ton as I have a car. Have yet to feel unsafe alone. Seems like it’s mostly about being aware of where you are and not going into areas known for sketchiness
Rising Star
I lived there for four years - one car stolen and three break ins - one time they got a lot of stuff, and one time someone apparently slept in my car. On the other hand, someone returned a lost wallet to me with cash still in it, and I don’t recall any violent crimes. The other thieves are the parking enforcement people. Have a parking ticket budget if you’re going to park on the street regularly. I lived there for a year without a car. It’s doable but I didn’t cross a bridge for most of that time which was tough.
I agree with BCG1. I live in the area. It’s fine. Avoid sketchy areas particularly at night or during low-traffic periods. Car break-ins are more common. If you have a car, think about where you park and don’t leave anything inside it.
Depends where you’re ubering. We use the car primarily for road trips outside SF (wine country etc.) and ubering there would be very expensive. We leased a car initially at ~$250/month plus gas and insurance, which is pretty good and cheaper than regular ubers.
