Is it better to quit or get fired?
It’s awards season for Scroogiest Company of the year! Time for Q4 cuts and gotcha just kidding about them bonuses haha memorable moments.
I’ll go first- Argonaut just laid off a lot of people right before the Dec. 9th bonus dispersal date that was promised for folks who had been employed since March 2020. Those crazy kids! Always up to something silly!
Gonna go ahead and say though that Better is still narrowly in first place after the Zoom firing holiday Xmas special. Who else?
Layoffs at r/ga today 💔
Whom ever thunk of vision 2020 should be fired!

Skadden friends — potential lateral and heard that the tech/software is way worse than other peer firms (e.g., takes a century to run a redline and that you have to use Citrix at all times and not just when remotely logging in). Kinda surprised to hear it tbh. What’s the deal with being so behind the curve / is it really that bad? Can you guys use iPads for markups and to connect to your DMS, etc.?
It’s a good time to be shadow fired. There are so many firms hiring right now. Learn from your mistakes. You’ll be just fine!
Awesome answer - will get a freshish start elsewhere in a better situation. Take this time to take stock of what you do and don’t want to do. Blessing in disguise
OP here - thanks for the kind words of encouragement. Long day, but I feel like I'm in a much better headspace than I was 12 hours ago. Looking forward to a clean slate and fresh start somewhere new.
Thanks again everyone for the support/encouragement!
Also, don’t feel like you have to stay in BigLaw & “cut it.” There are boatloads of happy lawyers doing meaningful & sophisticated work in regional firms & small to mid-sized firms.
Interesting. Didn’t realize such things were happening in this market. Transactional?
Seconding this, are you transactional? (If so, you will be fine!) also as class of 2019, very weird that they wouldn’t want to work with you to help your troubleshoot… it’s their loss!
Don’t tell recruiter you were shadow fired
My understanding is that you're basically told to see yourself out after x weeks/months. Externally, it'll otherwise appear as though you left on your own and not that you were pushed out. So you don't have to deal with the stigma of being fired/laid off and can play it off in a way to get a new job.
Ignore this if you’re not in the right head space but I think I’m about to get shadow fired and would appreciate any warning signs you may have received so I can compare.
100% this is a first year overthinking it 🤣 okay all jokes aside, DM me friend I can give you a decent answer if you give me some facts
That’s tough. Really. I’ve known more people in your shoes than you’d believe. You managed to get into a top firm, you can do it again. You’ll find your feet. And to echo another comment, this is THE hiring market to find a new role. If you need some advice or ideas on where to apply, DM me. Regardless — let it sink in today. Take a breath. Gather yourself. And it’ll work out.
Update from OP - had multiple offers and just accepted one today. Excited for a fresh start and thankful for the support/encouragement everyone offered!
Hey! Hmu. I’ll help you land somewhere else. Ex-biglaw with extensive ties in the market.
That happens all the time, great spot to be in, if you want any market intel, let me know.
Send me a DM if you are in the NY/LI area. My firm is hiring for a junior corp associate.
Three months is BS. I was given six. You should ask for more time if you need it (and you may). Leverage them to help you look as well, they will.
You can definitely get another firm job right now, but I would really look at making the jump to in-house in a couple years. I stuck it out in biglaw and made partner but tbh the money isn't worth it after a while, and now it's almost impossible to get an in-house gig (too senior). Wish I had left as a 5th year and started building an in-house career. As you get older time matters more than money, and biglaw is really for people who value money over time.
What practice group? If tx, you’ll be fine. If lit or rx, more of a hustle but probably fine.
What does shadow fired mean. Nothing online about it.
I think they tell you to find a new job without telling you you’re fired
I'd love to refer you to my old firm (V50) if you're interested! Feel free to DM me.
Hey. All great advice up there. Please DM me. I have an idea/lead!
