Thoughts:
1. Meet each other, possibly in a third location 2 or 3 times. Surviving 4 6-week gaps is easier than 1 6-month gap.
2. Agree in advance on a communication schedule, at least an hour a week of video calls. Consider the impact of time zones on scheduling and energy levels.
3. Plan for how you will handle finances, if you were living together (e.g. how will bills get paid? do both of you have the logins?). Other logistics can matter too, like spare key location, router password, etc.
4. Confirm that you're on the same page regarding monogamy. Neither of you want to find out 12 months from now that there was a fling that the other assumed wouldn't happen.

YES I have been through this twice (two different partners). the first time obviously didn’t work out and I can tell you why. the second time it worked and we are still doing it.

Make time for each other. this is definitely easier since COVID and quarantine and you might not have as many plans these days with seeing friends or going out with coworkers. but the point is to make time to call each other, FaceTime, text. but also you HAVE to know that both will have other things going on as well. they love you but their life is not, cannot be, and shouldn’t be 100% about you. During my first long distance relationship, he would get upset with me if I was out with my friends or at the gym and not responding to his texts even though he knew I was out doing something. Of course he wasn’t ill intended but he just felt left out and was having serious FOMO not being with me and being part of the memories I was making with my friends. My current relationship has been long distance for almost a year now. we have much better communication than the last, we understand we both have lives outside of each other, but we make time to talk and FaceTime each day to say good night or during the day if we just want to say hi.

Any practical advice on how to make sure we keep the communication channels open?

I’m not sure of the specifics, but I would plan to rendezvous once or twice. 6-month is a long time. Even if you have to meet in the middle.

smart

How far are you moving?

Pretty much half way across the world, and due to covid, chances of us meeting each other during this time are slim! :(

Communication is even more important long distance. Setting expectations as well. Miscommunication in a long distance relationship can be deadly, because it’s easier to hang up than to walk away. Remind each other you still care often, try to take a trip to visit each other at least once each if possible. Those things make it easier. Poor communication or no communication are the really hard things to overcome. I wish you all the luck on this adventure, and in your relationship together

TLDR: Getting over your ex of 2.5 years ghosting you after they said they wanted to reconnect.

I was dating someone for about 2.5 years and then we broke up because of COVID and the long distance was making it too difficult to continue. The break up must’ve been like a 4-5 minute FaceTime because I was very distraught. After we broke up, she started seeing someone else but I was heartbroken and it’s taken me over a year to really get over everything and process those feelings. (Cont.)

My partner left the industry during the pandemic and I’ve been lost since. We worked together our entire careers, and I feel like since he left I haven’t come up with a single good idea or really cared about any projects. I know I wasn’t the reason he left, but I have imposter syndrome now. Did he carry us as a team? Am I good enough to do this without him? Do I care enough to do this on my own? How do you deal with losing a long-term partner who was half of your work life for years?

How do you guys make friends in the city?

I’m a very outgoing person and make friends pretty easily so this really caught me off guard. I’ve lived here a year and still don’t really have any solid friends here. Granted WFH doesn’t make things any easier.

Do you guys have any advice on how you made friends here?

I've been working remotely for the past two years, and it's been great. I love working from home and being able to watch my kids grow up through their eyes as they play around me. But sometimes, when you're in this kind of situation, it's hard to know what to talk about with your coworkers.

I am currently a year from finishing my PhD and was looking at VC's as a career path because I like to do meta-analysis of different climate change techs. I networked with VCs and one of them was receptive but didn't have the budget currently for a full time hire. They said they'd be interested in working with me to do a research paper over the coming semester, and was wondering if I could leverage this into a full time offer?

Is a white paper with a VC going to be attractive on my CV?

People who are more asexual/aromantic, how do you explain it to people? People always ask if I’m LGB and I just respond that I’m none of the above. When I was in college, I knew I wasn’t hetero, but I wasn’t sure what I was. So I just did what everyone else did. Years later, I realized that I’m asexual but people hear things about me from my past and ask if I’m LGB. Do you just say you’re LGB and move on? I don’t feel like giving a 30 minute lecture every time someone asks.
