Should a teacher with only ten years left in the classroom go to the trouble of getting their NBCT?

As an NBCT, YES!! Yes you should! I have helped many teachers in my area through the process.

Ten years is still quite a bit of time and you never know what will happen in those ten years. I’m a “Man plans. God laughs.” person. 🤷🏼‍♀️ So, if it is something to help your career, then go for it.👍🏻

If you are like me, and are sick of the PDEs offered to renew your license, get Nationally certified. I did it. My license needs renewal in 2022 and I’m set. No extra PDEs needed. The raise is nice (Not as much as you would think). Depending on your district there may be an incentive bonus to help pay for it. I will start my renewal 2023. It’s a 5 year certification now instead of 10, but how it works is you are certified until the license you use to renew expires so for me it will be 8 years. Does it take time?—-yes. Do you have to write papers?—-yes Everything you must do, is with the students you currently have and most admin expect you to do anyways. I like to think of it as proving to everyone that you are an awesome teacher. If you are currently remote, find out all the information on how the process will be modified. If the process is too daunting with Covid restrictions, be patient and start next year.

Yes. It’s worth it.

I’m in NC and it was the only way to get a raise so yes!

Here is what I would advise having been a very successful NBPTS assessor for ETS and then Pearson, for the past seasons........look at the economic advantages - does your state or place offer pay incentives for it, does it contribute to credit for future staff development needs, will it help you get a better job if you desire upward mobility or need to move? For me, I did not find an advantage of any kind, so I chose not to, especially due to the cost of it all, and being in a state that tests for teacher certification and training on their own, from the state board, NBCT would not replace or waiver that need. I found, I got more out of what my state does for teacher support (tuition, etc.) and future use, by having a post graduate degree instead. Do your homework first, it is not an easy program but it is not designed to be. An NBCT is at the top of their game and they earned it. But just like an MEd or higher there is no free ride and in the words of a famous Beatle - it don't come easy.

I have a student with autism. He is mostly behavioral and at a lower learning level so he has to be in a separate classroom. We try to let him play with the students at recess or join in class parties. He has a sibling that attends school as well. When we were waiting in car line a group of girls talked about how they feel so bad for the sibling because of my student. Thankfully, neither student or sibling heard. But how do I respond to that as an adult? Especially, if they do hear?
