Should have 8 months today but I let it get the best of me on Friday. I picked up a new white chip today. I know exactly where my missteps were. How to get over the guilt of starting over?

That sucks but it's incredible that you are not letting one slip derail your journey and send you on a spiral. I once heard this framed as: when you step in dog poop, you just wipe it off your shoe and keep walking. No need to roll around in it.

Think about it this way: you have been sober for 241 of the last 242 days (assuming I calculated correctly). That is over 99.5%! Think of all the hangovers you haven't had, all the crushing embarrassment you haven't felt, all the money you've saved and all the energy you've gained. Your journey isn't resetting, you have come so far already! Every journey has a stumble. That doesn't take away from all your progress.

8 months is amazing for someone who has not made it past 9 weeks. I’m not an expert but I do think you should be proud of what you’ve accomplished. Knowing your missteps exactly is key and I’m confident you’ll have more success now OP.

Don't feel shame. Every choice we make is consciously done. That's why one of the first steps is acknowledging what we have done. I found in my journey that individuals that "need help" don't know that they do. They are "too far gone." It made me mad when I was ready to get clean that I couldn't get "help." But then I was told what I just wrote above. And then he broke it down to me in simplest form: you accepted what you did was wrong. You know what to do so do it. Everything else is an excuse. Addiction is an eternal battle, some days easier than others. Own it, learn from it, and keep moving forward.
You know you slipped up, you're human. So tomorrow is a new day - we take it day by day - so tomorrow just choose to not do it.
Not sure if that sounds like tough love or not but you've already been through the worst parts and came through. You're unstoppable from here on out....but only if you allow yourself to be.

The program is based on not regretting the past. Use your own experience, no matter how many relapsed, to help others. Keep doing the steps. But do something different this time. Keep coming back my friend.

This whole deal is “one day at a time”; yesterday and every “yesterday” before that, whether good or bad, is behind us. Focus on today and all the things you have to be grateful for. Relapse is part of many people’s stories, and it’s sometimes just what that person needs to “get it” and stick with it going forward.

Also, take a look at the days/weeks/months leading up to your relapse. What happened? What changed? What was missing or what was added?

Were you going to meetings? Calling your sponsor? Reading the book? Working the steps? Praying and meditating? Being of service?

Does a PhD in computer science make it any easier to get jobs at big tech companies versus only having a Masters? I know that I want to eventually work at a company like Google or Salesforce and I feel I have a long road to get there coming out a Masters program with not much work experience. If I want to go to an AA meeting do I just show up? What happens my first time? Do I have to quit drinking before I go to one/ be committed to quitting before going? How many people are at these? Is there a time/day of week that is best to go? How often do people in AA have to go to meetings? Does it cost anything once you join? I just can’t shake the feeling that my luck is going to run out. Not a daily drinker, but blackout when I do. Thx.

Im ready to really try to get sober for keeps this time. What tips and tricks do you have for the first ten days where I’ll deal mostly with just the physical elements? Ive done it before@but never made it past 30 days.I finally made it to my first aa meeting. Wasnt ready to get phone numbers yet, but finally going and wanting to go back is big. I also am starting an IOP therapy program which is 10 hrs of weekly therapy for my social anxiety that is certainly intertwined with my drinking.

I relapsed one week ago and feel awful about myself. I’m having trouble finding motivation and strength to get sober again now

My boyfriend of a year got a DUI this weekend and has had drinking problems in the past. He fully admits he is an alcoholic, and will do therapy/go to AA moving forward. My therapist suggested I be a “computer program running in the background” and essentially leave him to allow him to work on himself. This is obviously a really hard decision, and I feel like I should listen to my therapist, but my heart is pulling me the other way. Anyone else been through something similar or have advice?

I’m sober curious. I’m also about to help a new non-alcoholic spirit company with their launch.
I have a question for people in recovery. If a brand were to contend that sobriety is a spectrum, or allow for that to a least be part of the conversation, how does that make you feel? Are other brands doing a good job of being inclusive of people who are truly sober?
(I get that NA drinks / spirits can be triggering for people in recovery)

Anyone want to chat about their addiction/sobriety? I’m getting forced into compliance by my SO and kind of glad and sad at the same time.

My husband's been smoking for almost 15 years and can't stop. He tried vaping but didn't like various side effects. Any time I bring up him quitting he either ignores me and leaves the house to go smoke or gets angry, screams at me and says I'm not helping him. He did try patches and gum for a day and didn't like them. We've been together for 14 years and are thinking about having a baby. Should I just accept the fact that he will get cancer and die while putting me and our child through pain?

Covid has been hard. March 2029- December 2020 I drank a lot to cope without realizing it. January- March I didn't realize I was depressed. March I came to terms with increase and ongoing suicidal ideation and needed help.

I went into a intensive outpatient program (IOP) which has been super helpful.

During the beginning of covid I drank every day and in a great deal. January it was a "dry" month which was hard the first week but overall great.

March 2021 realized I'm clinically depressed.

After 3 years, the therapist disclosed that she’s in the program. I had wondered often about the source of her knowledge of the steps. Still I would’ve preferred her to remain anonymous in this regard. Now I keep wondering about whether I’ll see her at a meeting and what her story is. So odd. So self centered of me.
