Should I ask about the salary range or budget during the HR screening call if they don’t bring it up? I can’t get a good estimate on all the online tools.

Absolutely! It should be your first question. Helps save everyone time. The first phone call is when you need to know the range, as its not worth doing interview rounds and later realizing its not in your range. At that point you just wasted your time and energy.

Even if the range is within what you want, follow up with questions about the projects, teams, culture, WFH, benefits etc and let them know your decision about your feeling about the compensation range.

Word of advice, a good HR rep will usually share these details on the first call. The first call is usually an advertisement of the role, compensation and benefits, and for the HR person to check your culture fit and checkboxes in prescreening set by hiring managers.

If the HR person dodges the question, i’dbe very sceptical. ( sometimes theyre not allowed to openly share but if they keep avoiding the question, i’d be wary of company practices)

Agree! Thank you for taking the time to be so thorough.

Yes, please do. You want to say something like I want to make sure my goals, experience align with this role expectation and budget.

Absolutely!!!
If they don’t give a straight answer. Then you know you can’t trust them. Also, nothing wrong in asking questions.

Yes, ask for the range. No point in wasting everyone’s time. If the range is on the low side or less than what I expect, but the position is something that I am really interested in, I ask for detailed information on benefits, work life balance, culture, etc… sometimes these things can compensate for a lower range.

Keep in mind that this is a business negotiation. The goal is for both sides to benefit. If they avoid the question, I would consider it is a red flag. Ask yourself if you want to work for a company that is more concerned with hiding salary range than finding the best fit for the position.

I want to add that I live in Colorado so all companies are legally obligated to disclose the salary range. When this law passed companies would explicitly exclude Colorado applicants on national job postings. What is so special about their salary range that it must be kept secret?? What else would they be willing to hide from potential hires? I found it distasteful.

I always talk about it in the first conversation unless in the [very rare] case that I already have very good insight that the comp covers both my required AND ideal increase.

That said, it's in the first conversation, but it's not the first question. I leave room to see if the recruiter will bring it up but if we get to the last 5mins abs they haven't k and I don't already have the info, then I usually say something like "I'm interested in moving forward. However I noticed the job posting didn't provide a salary range. Can you fill me in?"

likeuplifting

You can definitely ask, they should have something lined out for the qualifications they expect for certain salary ranges, and at what spectrum of the range each qualification is in…

likeuplifting

“Would you be able to share the pay range for this position?”

If they don’t give you a straight answer just save yourself some time walk tf away.

like

If they bring it up that is great because now you can negotiate later. You never want to come out first call and talk salary. I say this because you first want to find out more about the actual job duties, culture, work life balance first. You then use that information to negotiate more money because you now have leverage as to why you should be paid more based on what you bring to that position.

likeuplifting

Always ask. Salary shouldn’t be a secret and recruiters/HR are often willing to give out this information.

uplifting

I know that the company I’m currently working for would find that unsavory. They have expressed before that they judge when people seem worried about money.

You mean they’d find it unsavory if you care about whether or not they can afford you? Naaaah. We’re just trying to not waste time

I use "I need to know the pay range for the position aligns with my range of expected compensation. If the two do not align - there isn't much point in continuing with the process."

This fees a little aggressive.

Hey everyone! Wanted some advice - got an offer from a big ad agency for a Planning Manager role. Base salary is $90K (more than satisfactory, I have 2.5-3 years of total agency exp), but their PTO is severely lacking especially compared to my unlimited PTO benefit at my current job - they offered 10 actual PTO days, which are even prorated since it's mid-year. Assuming their PTO allowance is negotiable, any advice for how to handle the email follow-up to the written offer/how much to ask for?

I state my salary expectations based on research, experience, education.
She has to talk to the CEO again to find out what is negotiable within the overall package
