A general question. For how many years of experience - lead engineer position is given in SocGen ? I know it depends on performance but have seen employees with 7+ yrs get lead position while someone like me having almost 8.8 years was still given the role of Specialist software engineer.

Anyone can pivot to tech but must fill the knowledge gap first. Look into bootcamps or continuing education programs at local schools. Then use current transferable skills and tech knowledge to transition.
> I’m far from an expert in computer science
Same is true for 90% of people in tech (including FAANG). The core competencies are abstract problem solving, mental-model building, and communication. Coding is the easy part that anyone can learn.
There are lots of roles in tech other than software engineers. I'd recommend making lists of your skills (technical and non technical), what you like doing every day, and what types of work you want to do more of, then start looking at roles at tech companies to see what roles/departments might be a good fit for your interests and skills!
Have you thought about working in defense? I heard they pay well for engineering positions mostly the one that are closer to production
you’d be a good candidate to transition into SWE. Swe’s with physics backgrounds generally tend to do well in the industry, plus you said you have solid coding experience. Sounds like it would just come down to technical interview prep for you. Pay would be significantly higher as new grads usually start out at 6 figures
I’ve made the transition into tech a couple years ago. Did not have the advantage of your engineering background, at the time I had been working as an admin assistant. Went to a coding bootcamp and never looked back. I am currently making low six figures and negotiating a promotion that will put me around $140k. It’s worth it.
If your merely looking for the pay opportunities and not chasing a passion in tech , I’d first begin by networking within your industry, profession, and education to learn more about the opportunities in front of you. With your current education, there is no reason you can’t work up into a 3 figure job imo. You likely just need to be willing to work hard for it and be open to changing employers. Obviously, your location can largely affect all of this.
