Should I feel bad for leaving a job during a busy month? I work for a small agency and there is so much work in the pipeline and my company really relies on me but I’ve been there for 5 years and my salary sucks and I have no benefits.

When they lay people off do they wait until it’s a good time for that employee? Not being cold, just saying — that’s how business works.

Imagine your employer thinking “Should I feel bad for not giving SD market rate salary but keep them grinding as a critical resource?” If they felt bad they would have paid you a long time ago.

No

Leave. And if they want you to freelance until they find a replacement, charge them a lot.

likesmart

Amen to this. I can’t believe they’ve had you for 5 years and still no benefits or decent salary. If they ask you to freelance, don’t let them take advantage in that situation too.

like

No. Standard 2 weeks notice, thank them for the five years and go give it you all in your new job.

likeuplifting

No benefits after 5 years!? Leave now.

like

They’re taking advantage of you.

like

2 weeks notice is standard in the US? whoa The UK is 1-6 months depending on length of service/level

funny

but yes, gfto of there

Thanks everyone! I definitely agree with you all. I think I’m more concerned with burning bridges.. I don’t want to look like the bad one for leaving in the middle of a big project where I was the lead role.

Do what’s best FOR YOUR! Because your company will always do what’s best for them!

Would they feel bad for letting you go during a personal hard moment in your life? There, u got your answer.

likehelpful

No. They're all 'busy months'.

like

Do you have another job lined up? Are you going freelance? If it’s the later then as a good gesture on the way out you can offer to help them continue the work on these projects for your new day rate (which should be set slightly high for them considering they didn’t give you benefits as a full timer for FIVE FUCKING YEARS).

like

Never. They wouldn’t feel bad laying you off in a slow one. Do your best work til the bitter end - don’t leave at noon on Friday, stick it out and they will remember that. Then move on with a clear conscience.

helpful

Leave. You’re not even getting benefits?!?

I know right now many people(especially in audit) are jumping ships from one PA firm to another! Please, please, make sure that you get the highest possible base salary and sign on bonus!!! Those firms don’t want you, they need you!!! So make sure to squeeze as much money as possible and remember that they won’t think twice to squeeze you as well as soon as you join them.

I have been unhappy about my current job for a bit now, been at the company for almost 10 years, and have started looking for a new job. I have a solid job offer on the table, but a newer PE group just reached out and are looking for a high level either VP or Director of retail sales (my specialty). I am more interested in this private equity group as I would get to build a whole team and really make a retail strategy but they are newer so I am unsure the stability.
