Should I feel bad if I stopped caring about covid? I’m vaxed, boosted and I had the OG strain last year. My family gives me crap for not wanting to wear a mask anymore, if the mask drops below my nose they immediately ask me to put it back up. Everyone I know is getting omicron regardless of how boosted and masked they are. Am I a bad person for giving up?

You phrased the question as "am I a bad person for giving up?"

Depends partly on what you mean by "giving up" and why you are heading in that direction. It also helps to recognize there is no shortage of fearful people who will gladly shame, coerce, and name-call you into doing what they want, regardless of efficacy, to make them feel safe - in the name of virtue, of course. So it helps to get real clear on such people and recognize that their self-important virtuous feelings entitle them to treat you unvirtuously. There is no shortage of such types all over this forum.

Anyway, cloth facial coverings are not a "mask" and are so worthless as to be counter-productive. Calling t-shirt fabric a "mask" does not magically transform it into an impenetrable virus barrier. You are not a bad person for recognizing this reality and preferring to live in that space rather than be imprisoned by people's neurosis. How you take the stand matters, but you are not bad for standing up for what you understand to be the truth. You can also decide to accommodate in various situations. There is no one-size fits all answer here; the circumstances matter a lot, as do your actions and the manner of your actions.

It's also not "just" wearing a mask, as if face coverings are a completely neutral activity. There are downsides, but true believers only frame the issue as a selfish refusal to be inconvenienced by wearing a mask, which is a convenient caricature to argue against.

If you are starting to realize a disconnect in the messaging, recognize that covid theater has real costs and downsides, and that most of the interventions have done almost nothing to stop covid from rolling around the globe in waves of seasonality, and would prefer to live your life accordingly, then that seems like a good thing to me.

"Calling t-shirt fabric a "mask" does not magically transform it into an impenetrable virus barrier."

Which is a problem ... if you were planning to anoint something as an impenetrable virus barrier. Is that the goal?

The reality of the mask is it will not stop you from getting sick, it's only purpose is to stop you from spreading if you are sick. Just think do they put masks on patients in surgery? no just the doctors and nurses. You are NOT a bad person for feeling that way and it's a tough decision about wearing or not wearing a mask with your family. I tend to wear one if it's really important to someone I care about and avoid those who give me the side eye for not wearing a mask. I pick my vacations and what I do outside my house partly based on if I have to wear a mask or not so I am with you on the mask fatigue.

You are fabulously normal! This insanity ends when people — right and left — stand up and say enough.

likefunnysmart

OP - we can’t give up - time is allowing additional treatments to be discovered. We have already come a long way from the initial stage with development of vaccines and now anti viral drugs. It’s not like it was a constant lockdown. There have been periods where levels were down enough to allow more normalcy. Hopefully within a couple of months we will be in another lull.

likefunny

people are getting omicron cause we’re getting more relaxed about precautions in general. The whole reason why its so rampant is that we’re socializing more and doing more “normal stuff.”. so yes, its a uphill battle we probably wont win. But also its cause of attitudes like yours that are making it difficult to manage as a collective society.

likefunnysmarthelpful

IM - I have a hard time believing you’re wearing a N95 mask in OTF. As I’m sure you know, the surgical masks and any variation of cloth masks are not effective against Omicron.

And finally, losing some weight should bring down your covid risk!

Honestly aren’t you kind of a jerk for not respecting your family’s, wishes, covid or not? If your mom asked you to wash your hands before dinner would you say “no, I believe in building immunity by eating off of dirty hands”? No, you would just wash your damn hands bc it has no negative impact on you but helps her. Same with a mask - it has zero negative consequences but makes your family feel better.

likefunnysmart

OK sorry S&1–I didn’t mean “you” specifically, but I do see how it could be interpreted that way. Poor writing on my part.

What I meant was those who would advocate respecting a family member’s wishes as long as it’s something Herr Fauci would endorse, but advise canceling that same family member if it wasn’t.

In the same boat. Nah, don’t let others make you feel like a bad person. I don’t bother discussing my beliefs regarding covid with many people because you just end up getting demonized immediately.

KPMG3, I’m vaccinated and boosted and wear masks and generally am cautious - but I am also pregnant and a cancer survivor and immunocompromised. I trust that my friends are being similarly cautious. If one of them suddenly was over being cautious and decided to go maskless and go to crowded places etc. because they got sick of being cautious, I’d want them to tell me. I understand it would be their decision and honestly I would 100% understand, but their risk tolerance is not the same as mine.

I don’t wear a mask unless required to do so, am fully vaccinated including booster, am immunocompromised due to my medication, and have never gotten covid. My husband is a nurse who has been working in the covid unit for over a year and hasn’t gotten it either. I’m not really concerned about it even if I got it.

Help us understand, are you immunocompromised because of a desease or because a medication depletes your immune system? If the med, what is the med treating? We just want to be educated so we learn.

I agree with BA1 and SA1. You’re normal and you do you! I’m fully vaxxed and will get boosted once I’m eligible. Time to get back to normal life. Let’s protect the vulnerable but the rest of us can get back to a fully open society

The mask is the hill you’re willing to die on? Seriously? Like not even just in a grocery store? It’s a piece of damn fabric and it’s wintertime

No one can get actual N95 masks. I did buy a small amount in January of 2020, when I saw how things were going. Now, you can only find KN95 masks.

I’m with you!

It doesn’t really matter how you feel. You may be asymptomatic and pass it along to someone who may have an immune deficiency. At the end of the day, we’re trying to flatten the curve to alleviate healthcare workers. The earth is a closed fishbowl, so to speak, everyone will ultimately get COVID. We’re only trying to slow transmission rates. Wear the mask. Thanks.

EY5 what alternate reality are you living in?

No you shouldn’t feel bad. You’re doing your part by getting vaccinated and leaving the mask behind. We get vaccinated so we can be in-person, live our lives, and not wear a mask. Still do the basic pre-pandemic hygiene steps like wash your hands and cough/sneeze into your shoulder.

likefunny

We don’t get vaccinated to not wear a mask. People wore masks long before the pandemic began

You are normal… live your life! You have done what the ‘experts’ say we need to do to ‘stop the spread’ and yet still got it and were fine. I bet you will also be reasonable if you do get sick, which means staying home… funny, that’s what we did with colds / flus before covid was a thing!

No dog in Sweden has wore a mask ever during the entire pandemic. Are they all bad people? Their Covid numbers are low rn, while neighboring Denmark struggles. Can one of the goodie two shoe partners explain it to me?

Yes, you should feel bad. Mask up. It’s not hard.
