If you are worried about them not liking you because you disagree, or that you're disappointed in their performance (and you plan on taking them to task) - then find a way to do it that sends the message and doesn't require you to burn that bridge.
Don't be a dick just because you have the upper hand. Empathize a bit.
Ask them if you can give them some feedback. Then talk about the specific situation where they could've made a better judgment. Then talk about their behavior or judgment, keep it objective. Then, talk about the impact it had and suggest an alternative for future situations.
"Can I talk to you about some feedback I have for you and your team? Okay, when I call to check the status of the research leading up to the client demo, and you mislead me about how far along you are, you put me in an awkward situation. I know it can be tough to meet this demanding timeline, but we need to be realistic with each other so we can manage expectations and, sometimes we could even buy each other more time. Does that work for you?"
