Should I get a roommate in Chicago (first job out of college) or is it worth an extra $600ish a month to live in a studio?

Roommates suck. Although, so does paying rent. Whichever you like least, choose the other.

Get a roommate. You may end up traveling a bunch and will Love the idea of not wasting your money on an apt you’re never in...if you don’t like it after a year, you’ll be more familiar with the city and where you might want to live on your own

I had a roommate when I first moved to Chicago and loved it. Have started living alone recently and love that too, but I recommend getting a roommate right now. You only have a few more years where having a roommate is more fun than frustrating

Housing is the largest expense you have. A roommate can cut that bill in ~half.
If your spend plan has 30% of net income allocated to housing, but you can do it for 15%, you can invest the difference and greatly accelerate making yourself wealthy.

like

Tl;dr Get a roommate for the first year and save save save.

That depends on you and your salary/financial situation, and your personal desire for someone else to be around. (Hate other people in your space? Maybe ante up.)

My advice would be to get a roommate for your first year. Give it a shot at first. 600$/mo is nothing to sneeze at - right now would be the time to be saving as much as possible, investing, and paying down your highest interest students loans.

I will tell you that if you start out living on your own, it becomes VERY difficult to entertain the idea of living with someone else again, which can make you end up spending more in the future since you have this new standard of living to uphold.

Get a roommate while you're still fresh out of college, and used to sharing space. Once you go solo... You never go back.

like

Unless you seriously hate roommates, save the money and actually invest it. 401k now is a great head start so that money can grow. Want to buy property one day but don’t have a family member willing to foot the down payment? $600/mo for 3 years starts to look like a down payment on a small condo ... increase that if you can and you’ll get there before you’re 30 if you want to do so.

like

Roommate for sure- you'll save a lot of money. Which can go towards student loans/401k/savings
