I personally wouldn’t want to live in a hcol city without making >$80k. I definitely think you should move at some point since it’s a dream of yours and your 20s is the perfect time to do it, but it might be hard to enjoy at $65k.

I moved to NYC when I was making $58k. It was rough and I wouldn't recommend that experience unless you are absolutely dying to be here. We pay city and state taxes. We pay more in every capacity than most other cities. I was much more comfortable at $90k, so if you can wait, I would recommend sitting tight for a bit longer.

I think you can find a place for $1200 IF you get roommates or live a little farther like upper east/west. My friends went straight after undergrad and made the same as you. They didn’t really save anything (rent + going out all the time) however you learn to make it work. You just have to figure out what tradeoffs you’re willing to take ie. higher rent, smaller space, smaller savings. But there’s no place like NYC and it’s such a fun place to live especially when you’re young

Do it if it makes you happy. Experiencing it for 1-2 years. You can always move somewhere else after if big city life is not for you. Fwiw I did the same in my mid 20s and never regretted it. Now back in a MCOL place so I can have a bigger house 😎

If you can get the adjustment and have always wanted to experience another city (even for a year or two) go for it!! The life experience and memories you make weigh out the cost of rent. I did a similar move and moved to a HCOL city where my rent doubled but I came in with a lot in savings- it hurt initially but going into it knowing it’s just for a short time helps significantly

I make $75k and my roommates both make $60k! We live on UES in a 3bedroom and have really enjoyed living in the city. We definitely can’t spend AS frivolously as some friends but I have had nothing but great experiences here. Just limit restaurants to ~2 times a week and you’ll be fine. Biggest cost here outside of rent is social budget, but there are TONS of free things to do on weekends here that we haven’t felt left in the dust.

I just moved to NYC from Atlanta at 25! I would highly recommend getting a NYC job there for the higher salary before moving. That's what I did, otherwise you'll struggle. Everything here costs $$$.

like

Personally I wouldn’t move to NYC at that salary

like

Thanks. Looks like I have to keep working on my side hustle

I’m all about exploring and living the life you want in your 20’s, but I highly recommend getting a salary increase or a new job that will pay you more. New York is not a joke when it comes to how pricey it is to live here. Taxes are also higher here so your take home pay won’t be as high. Were you thinking about getting a roommate as well? This will help you cut down on costs.

like

Thanks, forgot to consider taxes will be higher. I grew up in Boston so have an idea of how expensive it really is… I would definitely get a roommate to reduce rent $$

My starting salary in NYC was $60k and I lived with two roommates in a nice part of Midtown East each paying $1200. It’s so easy to overspend on restaurants, drinks, random purchases but nothing that a budget can’t fix.

like

To clarify, I have to move out either way in the next few months - so will get a place in ATL or can request a transfer.

Also my salary would likely be adjusted from MCOL to HCOL but not exactly sure how much. Analysts in my role make closer to $80k in HCOL

It’s expensive and getting more expensive (lunch with a friend was $66 after tax+tip for 1 app, 2 entree and no beverages). However, the networking, friends and experienced as a younger unattached person are still great for those who seek it. Other cities are catching up on being able to supply these, but NYC still has a greater concentration. You have to decide what you value more and don’t second guess your decision, whatever it may be. Good luck!

Are you comfortable with a roommate? You’ll end up at more than 2k rent unless you 1) have a roommate and/or 2) are okay living outside of manhattan. If so I think it’s doable but would be difficult
