Should I pursue backpay for a botched market adjustment? My annual review’s market adjustment was based on incorrect word-of-mouth “data” (1 year less exp in my role than reality). After 2mo of pestering HR and eventually elevating it to my manager, who sent it even higher, it was corrected. Got a higher title and +9% salary adjustment. However.. there’s no mention of backpay for the ~2.5mo they took to correct it. Any advice for how to approach this?

Just email as if receiving what you are owed is expected. Hey (hrs w/ manager cc'd) thanks so much for the work you put in to fix ____. When should I expect back pay from date to date?

Agree 100% with Citi 1, just send a firm and polite email with the dates you’ll need back pay for. Good luck and I hope it gets resolved ASAP!

I am applying to more positions through staffing agencies as one way to get a writing job. When they tell me the hourly rate and I suggest a few dollars higher per hour, they'll say, "Just so you know, the competition is priced lower than you."

Is this to scare me into submission to charge less so that they can profit more? Or is an employer really not going to pick me because I am priced 1-$2 more per hour than someone else? Wdyt?

Hi guys, so a friend of mine has been head hunted for a job as a designer position for a interior design company. His current job is a good position which puts him on track to be creative director in 2 years. His current job is a great role, loves what he does but he’s not being paid as much as he should and he’s pretty curious about this other job offer. He’s thinking of going for a meeting with the other company. What kind of questions do you think should be asked in the meeting?

I‘ve been in a relationship for 2 years, and my avoidant tendencies flare up every so often when I feel let down by my SO — e.g., usually when he’s blanked on something he should have done to make me feel more supported in work or social contexts. He knows this about me and supports me wholeheartedly as I continue to work through it — but I know I can be quite cold and distant in these rare but painful moments. How do others work through this, if at all?

I’ve always gotten the advice that when you want to switch jobs you should take interviews from places you’re not actually interested in, so you can understand your value in the market and have better negotiating power.

I’m doing that rn - took a couple interviews to gauge my skills, my market value, and see what I need to work on for interviews that I actually care about.

However, I feel really guilty about wasting their time and going all the way knowing I’ll just say no at the end. Wwyd?

I received a job offer for a PM position with a base of $125K and a 10% bonus, fully remote and ok benefits. The parental leave is pretty bad, just FMLA and STD/LTD so the most I’d get is 60% of my salary for 12 weeks. I’ve cancelled most of my interviews except for one where the pay is $135K, 20% bonus, hybrid schedule, good benefits and 16 weeks fully paid parental leave. I’d like to start my family in a year or two - is it better to take the remote gig or the hybrid role with full paid leave?
