Heya
I am Data analyst and want to start with the fact that data analytics is quite a broad field - one will need to ramp up on stats, tech and business skills.
I suppose from marketing you will have transferable skills especially in regards to business acumen but otherwise there is a steep learning curve. Yes pay is good depending on the company and location but it’s not super easy to get your first high paying job without experience. Probably you can consider switching in your current company itself as marketing analyst to start with so you if you the enjoy the field or not. Good luck.
Thanks! I guess I can partially cover stats from my economics background, but definitely need to work on the tech. SQL and Python
Data analytics, I don’t mean campaign analytics, is where the action is. Focus on the bigger scope items and you shall reap the rewards
I’m also interested in data science, so definitely “pure” data analytics
I did something similar where I switched from paid media (ppc, social etc) to analytics and love it!
Also looking for another version of me, if you are interested
That's the dream isn't it?
You should consider a data strategist role. This would allow you to use both skill sets. Grey is hiring right now!
I’ve been thinking about making the transition as well. I’ve been in PPC for the last 6 years. I’ve always enjoyed the data portion of my roles over the creative.
Happy to share details of a role I'm looking for if interested
What you do find more interesting? If you’re after more pay, them marketing analyst make good money too.
I’m kinda tired of clients. Even if you have a great idea or strategy, if they don’t have the budget or don’t think it will work, then nothing. Big expectations & low commitment.
I like data, but I’ve never been in a pure data role.
I’m thinking about going in-house, maybe marketing analytics and then pure data analysis.
I’ve worked in Data Analytics for 15 years and I 100% think you should switch to data. Yes it is a bigger field with more opportunities but there is also more competition - despite this I think both your pay and prospects will be better. Also your marketing experience will never go away that’s something you can carry forever. Lastly - in my experience the workload in data is much lower than that of marketing. You have to take initiative if you want to get ahead - takes the right person. Good luck - and def choose data :)
It's been said here, but follow your interests. A pure data role is very very different from a blended marketing/data role. I work in marketing data science and love my work, but I'm not involved in much of the planning side of things (i.e. campaign/initiative planning). Rather, I help validate, test, and prioritize high-impact initiatives.
From a salary perspective, data is far more lucrative than marketing. (Think 50% higher for the same level / title)
If anyone has interested in marketing/analytics roles we have some open with good paying comp.
One is entry level and one is 3-5 YOE
Following! I am considering the same pivot. I enjoy the data analytics side of seeing what is and isn’t working behind the scenes and that’s an ever-growing field with a recession-proof business need.
Transition to data.. I have a business marketing degree but after seeing how quickly those departments get laid off (esp at WF) data will be a much more secure group to join.
There are many patterns you can take in marketing analytics. It’s such a broad term to be honest. In todays world, especially in agencies the data analytics department has several sub departments under the umbrella: data and insights, data and innovation, data and marketing science, strategy and data, and it keeps on going.
I also have a marketing background and lately I am really considering in sitting where data, science and research meets.
