Should I take a title bump without a $ bump?

Just to play devils advocate, you could take the title and then immediately leave, using the new title it to get an even bigger bump somewhere else. But to be clear, the fact that they aren’t increasing your salary to be commensurate with your title is some hot dog shit

likefunnyupliftinghelpful

Nope. Title bump means greater responsibilities, so you need to get paid more for that ish.

At my previous position, i took the title bump and the money came half a year later. Then I leveraged that to get negotiate an even bigger bump when I left. Unless you really want to stay where you’re at, use it as a stepping stone.

like

@OP: If the title bump is to Senior Strategist, that’s not made up. It’s indicative of the level of work you bring to the table. Same if the bump is to Director. I leveraged my own experience to get $70K more when I left my previous agency. You’re a strategist. Approach this strategically.

like

It’s a fake title unless they meet you with money

like

God no. You’ll never get paid and they’ll see you as a pushover they don’t have to pay, trust me on that.

likehelpful

No. Titles are made up in this industry and mean nothing.

likefunny

I took it once. They asked me “title or money?” And I chose title. Allowed me to negotiate my next thing much better, because I had then been in that role for much longer

like

No. It will haunt you forever, as most agencies have a % increase limit. If you don’t get a bump now, you’ll always be behind.

Go for the money! I recently moved with the intention of snagging a supervisor role. The agency thought I was better suited in a different spot and I really liked the team/client, so I made a lateral title move instead. I held firm at my salary request, consistently referencing my experience and my compromise on title. And they agreed. Went from $58 to $75K. I know it feels weird/greedy to make a big deal out of the money, but unfortunately that’s what it comes down to in the long run.

like

They bill clients based on your title.

like

No. Period amen.

like

Only if your plan is to be out the door as soon as the new title settles in. Then that could work in your favor for your next role. Otherwise nah.

like

Absolutely not. They agency makes more off of you, but you get nothing...unless as someone else said you use it to turn around and get another job (where you lie about your current salary).

like

@VP1: That’s exactly what I did: took the title bump and lied about what I was making (since I was so grossly underpaid) to secure the next position at a much higher rate. This is the only way it makes sense.

like

No, fight for a bump

No

Definitely no! Get that $$

Hell no
