Should litigation come out of legal or the businesses budget? My understanding is business? Any thoughts here or advice…

There’s two ways to do it. (1) you bill the business for legal spend, randomly screwing folks P&Ls annually, often for work occurring before they started. (2) you set up a legal accrual (maybe 1.5% of fees) and that pays for legal costs annually, giving the remainder back to the business at year end as straight profit. I don’t like the logic of having litigation costs coming out of my legal budget. I’m a cost center; I want my numbers cosmetically as low as possible. Cover my salaries; cover my bar costs; cover my anticipatory travel costs. Other than that, I can do my job on a legal pad, thx.

Advice for a career pivot in tax?

While I enjoy my job, it has become clear I’m not sure I want to do tax compliance forever. I am a very hard-worker and high performer, but it feels like the amount of work does not reflect pay or respect in tax.

I have considered tax M&A, tax technology or FP&A but would love to learn more about what each would look like before making the jump. If I could redo it all, I would become a trader or do something in finance, but that seems very far fetched (cont)

Does anybody have tips on how to handle this? I think what gets me is that this feels like a personality trait that I can’t fix, and it’s causing me to feel depressed.

Additional Posts in In-House Counsel

Where does everyone stand on resume formats for in house jobs at tech companies? My resume format is the very standard law school format with paragraph descriptions and my husband (a software engineer at a tech company) suggested I use bullets points and move my education section to the bottom. Thoughts?

Newb Question: Starting the search so going in blind. What roles do you apply for in an house position? I'm an M&A associate, but I look at these in house roles and have no idea what are the types I would be considered for: regulatory? product counsel? compliance? The only one for sure I know I'd get a look is securities counsel...what did others apply to? What doe these other roles do? And are the year ranges hard cut offs? Does 5 years mean 5 years or will the company consider 3-4?

How do you ask about WLB in an in-house interview (or do you wait until post-offer) in a way that doesn’t make you look like a slacker? I’m all for working hard (albeit not at a partner’s whim every random night or weekend), but I’m nervous about taking a paycut only to find myself in a role where I work late every night and people don’t take vacations. Maybe I have law firm PTSD but don’t want to make a bad move!

Reasonable base compensation expectations for regional general counsel position (direct report to CLO)? From what I can tell, company revenue is $500M - $1B (privately held company, so tough to know); construction industry (infrastructure / energy / mining); midwest headquarters. I’d be at the lower end of the experience requirements. Looked at MLA report, but looking for additional thoughts/opinions. Thanks!

Thoughts on whether it’s appropriate to start asking questions about a role (outside of the interview environment) before you get an offer?
