Why would you get the largest bonus if you didn’t work for a third of the year? Getting your base and a bonus while on leave is a good deal.
I think it’s tricky. Who is to say that you don’t work hard enough during your 2/3rds of the year vs someone who works all year but only in low impact low burn roles? Worth a debate on what’s the best model here
Chief
IMO it should never impact promo case, but prorating your bonus is fair game.
Bonus should be prorated to the amount of time you worked that year (eg same percentage but of less total amount of salary)
Promotion shouldn’t be impacted unless you haven’t actually had enough time to prove value / consistency in an on-the-fence case - like if someone said you needed 3 months more to really prove you were ready and you took leave instead then no, it wouldn’t make sense for you to be promoted under the assumption you would indeed prove yourself, because you haven’t actually proven yourself yet

It shouldn’t if the culture is right
Chief
Obv it should be prorated. Work 6 months get 6 months worth of bonus
Pro
Take the leave.
If it's your promotion year? Maybe. but who cares, it's 16 weeks of paid time off. I only took 4 weeks and deeply regretted it
Cost me a year on promos, but only because the MD at the time said it showed I lacked commitment to the firm as our leave wasn’t intended for men to actually take, rather it was a marketing tool…
WTF… I would report this guy
Deloitte: It impacts your bonus which will be prorated. Promotion impact would be individual on case by case basis.
Pro
Adding that proration is somewhat discretionary; it is based only on the amount of leave over a certain amount (16 weeks I think) so if youre out for half the year it’s not half your bonus, it’s only for the weeks over that initial limit; and is calculated based on FY so if your leave splits the FY in half, you may not see a proration.
And to your first question, it doesn’t impact your performance eval. You are assessed based on your performance during whatever time you weren’t on leave. If you will be on leave during the YE process, highly recommend prepping your coach and sponsors with the info they need before you go out.
I was promoted to SM after being on leave for half my promotion year and did not have my bonus prorated.
Pro
It shouldn’t, but my experience is that it does.
I’m shocked by some of the comments some people got from PPMDs and it goes to show how different the experience can be depending on the practice you land in. I took 20 weeks off (leave + vacation) for both of my kids; both happened in promotion year (Senior to Manager and this year Manager to Senior Manager) and I still made it. Nobody ever questioned it. My practice leadership actually encouraged me to take the time.
Pro
100% my experience at D as well. Complete support from leadership - wasn’t even a question of whether or not I would take max amount of time. Promotion was fully supported and they helped accelerate the things I needed to in order to wrap everything up before I went out.
Not for people in my group. For M and SM
Chief
Promotion yeah if you were proving you were ready to be promoted and then went on leave. If you left without definitively proving you’re ready you should just get promoted under the assumption you would be
Just take the leave bro

Are you really comparing bonding with your new born baby vs. job promotion OP!?? This isn’t even up for debate!
These responses are sad. In my experience, it had no impact on my promotion (M -> SM) and no impact on bonus (no proration). Fiscal year end is 6/30 and I took my leave from late march to late August.
Same here. Took leave. Got promoted and got full bonus. I was on a hoo high impact project for like 8 months tho
I took the full leave and didn’t effect me at all. Got the biggest raise and bonus I have ever gotten.

Prioritize your life outside of work on this one. I went back earlier than I wanted to with one of our sons and it wasn’t worth it.
As for impacting ratings and promotions, no firm will directly hold leave against you. But your rating and bonus should be a reflection of the impact you had on the firm. I’ve seen people take leave and still have a great impact and get promoted at multiple places. That’s the exception as the people - mostly women - made exceptional impacts during the time they were in the office.
But I’m at the end of the day, your kid is more important than a promotion.
I took 5 months off for leave, got promo and the highest rating
Take the leave.
