I’ve seen research for both. I personally don’t see what benefit a really high kid gets from being forced to work with low intelligence kids.
Doesn’t research suggest it’s detrimental?
I can tell you my daughter was bored out of her mind and HATED elementary school as she is very high end and was NEVER challenged. She is SO much happier in middle school where she is being challenged in preparation for honors classes next year. I don't care what the "evidence" says. No matter what, you have to teach to the bottom-the high end students get passed by as "they will always be okay." I've seen it in district after district.
Differentiation was apparently only for the lower students who went out for AIS. I asked and asked and asked for her to be allowed to do research projects about what was interesting to her, or upper level math sheets. I was told no. I even said I didn't care if they were ever graded-I didn't want to make more work for any of her teachers. I was still told no. It was extremely frustrating.
We work really hard at our school to mix the ability levels when sending them on to the next grade level. We only have 2 classes for each of the upper grades and they are divided pretty evenly because it does help all of them to have that mix of levels there. We try and make sure we have lots of projects that teach all the different learning styles because usually if they struggle with like reading sometimes they are better in acting or drawing...
