Should you ever negotiate salary during an interview, if asked? Or just say you expect a strong market offer and wait for their details after HR contacts you after the interview?

I would just say I need at least X if I were to even consider making a move. If you were to offer X then my decision will be very easy.

Try not to make the first move. Wait till you get the offer, you can take it after that.

People appreciate just being upfront there are too many candidates that they have to offer to play games

Try to get the target salary range from the recruiter. You should never give your number until you know the hiring manager’s budget.

Deal with HR usually.

I’m leaning towards waiting on the offer then haggling

It’s also illegal for recruiters to ask outright how much you make, so they have nothing to base an offer on except your expectation

I usually tell them the high end of what I expect to make this year and tell them I'm pretty happy where I am and have a great trajectory so would need an incentive to leave

I learned to always negotiate, even if they hit the target I'm looking for. Companies don't typically hand out their best offers, they hand out the best they're willing to pay you for you to decide to go with them and usually not a penny more. I got D to increase my offer by 20% and added a 10k signing bonus but I knew I had the upper hand in the negotiations so I pushed harder.

Looking to get a few certifications, I have worked in both IT and HR consulting and am trying to decide between ITIL, SHRM, and PMP. Any thoughts on which would be best for future, quickest to get, hardest test? I get the cert paid for and a bonus upon completion, so trying to decide which one to pursue or the order if I want multiple.

In years you don’t make your bonus, what do your billable hours typically look like? Are you missing it by a hair or is it normal to have some years where you’re only billing 1600? I just finished my first year and trying to figure out what a “normal” slow year looks like compared to a pandemic slow year.
