Sick of people trying to link on LinkedIn that I do not know and not even sending a message along with it. Or sending recruiting messages with jobs outside of my level/experience. 🤦🏽‍♀️

For perspective: I’ve been reaching out to people on LinkedIn that I don’t know because I’m trying to switch capabilities outside of my agency. No school to network through (yet), just trying to find out as much as I can about this career path and what it takes to get on it, particularly in my area. I almost always send a note when requesting, but for some reason it doesn’t offer that option unless I’m on desktop (am I missing it? It’s a weird oversight), and in those cases I’ll follow up with a note if they accept. Most have been awesome and replied, some accept and say nothing back, some haven’t responded in any way. I know it can be awkward - it’s kinda awkward for me to put myself out there like this - but I’m trying to do what I can for my career, and hopefully connect with some awesome people along the way.

I’m *under 60 years old.* In fact, I’m young enough to say that social media was a part of my college coursework. That said, it’s common sense to include a note when you’re blindly making “relationships.” I’m fascinated by all of the holier-than-thou posters acting like this is a legitimate “networking strategy” that we should come to accept because it’s “digital, d00d”, just like it’s best practice to spam people with bad banner ads because that’s what I saw happen in 2004. For all of the people that do accept this bad behavior as a part of life - do you also accept that your LinkedIn feed is a heap of steaming garbage, since you don’t know any of the people that you’re getting emails and notifications about? That you’re encouraged to wish happy birthday to? I’m in no way a special or interesting person, and I get requests from people in outside industries, other countries, maybe 10x per week. I can’t imagine what it’s like for people at sexy agencies, like Droga. LinkedIn must be a black hole.

Disagree with CL1. It’s lazy not send a quick note saying why you want to connect. And I’m waaay under 35 😘

☝🏻Hi. We have recruiters.

Right, but sending ‘request’ to connect without knowing the person or sending a message along with it is NOT networking.

like

100% agree, OP! If you are a recruiter, do your homework and suggest only roles that fit. And as an individual, say hi. Just like in real life!

like

I’m 30 and I find it annoying when people I don’t know connect with me. Networking happens in real life and then you connect digitally.

likefunny

Most people that grew up with the internet understand that LinkedIn is a networking site.

like

It’s been pretty swell so far!

like

Are you over 60? That is the only way this would make sense.

like

@CL1 I usually accept most connects. But random connects with no reason why to connect... GFY. I don’t need that. I need folks who can express their own value.

The best are the ones that have a “creative title.” Bob, I don’t know WTF a Human Conversations Maven does, nor do I care to find out.

Huh? No.. not sure where your head is at with that comment.

like

That’s like handwriting and mailing a thank you note. Antiquated. Most people under 35 follow loads of people they don’t know on every social media platform. The goal is to expand your network and meet people you don’t know.

Strat1 hope that formality and arrogance works in your favor. I’ve been in this industry for 15yr and strictly use Insta/LI to recruit my teams/talent these days. Any agency making leading edge work does. They don’t use recruiters. That includes Droga and WK btw. If you don’t accept they move on. Your loss.

likefunny

I’m with CL1. Instagram makes it easy to click down a whole bunch of potential contacts; I’m not gonna send a note with each one. If your issue is with recruiters, that’s a different story

@uxd1... I call bullshit. Just as I need to accept my kids are screen dependent, I accept the idea of digital networking... to deny this is to become a dinosaur

MD1 a good rule of thumb is does the person asking to connect have several current connections in common with you. If so, accept. Screw formal notes unless you’re trying to connect with the Queen of England. Ain’t nobody got time for that.

Looking for recommendations for a rear facing car seat that reclines well. Currently have a Nuna rava. My first was fine with it, but my 2nd (who is 1+) seems to get car sick and pukes on longer trips. She loves her nuna pipa infant seat though (basically lying down) and never gets sick in that. We're keeping her in the pipa for as long as possible, but I need to find a convertible option soon. Curious what other moms in similar situations picked.

My sister and I are 29 and 31, respectively. I’m struggling with something that has irked me our entire lives. My parents pay for things like her dog’s medical bills, vacations and moving expenses. They always want to help. The problem is they’ve never offered to pay for those things for me, and I’ve never asked because I’m a fully grown adult and don’t want them to spend their retirement on us. She has savings and isn’t struggling financially. Why does this bother me so much?

I’m 36, earn 100k and I work maybe 30 hours a week, and I’m a shining star. It allows me to enjoy life without stress. I can linger around and see myself (slowly) climbing the ladder. But part of me wants to put in hard work and grow a lot in my career and earn more for a stable financial future, but it means I’ve got to work more and stress more and I’m worried I won’t get time to relax and enjoy my life as before. But also I’m worried I’ll slack off. Anyone going through this? Would I regret?
