Sigh; do you still think this conviction will happen? I’m losing patience. Democrats need to get to it ASAP if he doesn’t face any consequences it’s only going to empower him and everyone around him that they can get away with an insurrection and killing a cop!

I never thought conviction would happen. But impeachment was still an appropriate response.

AD I have known John Roberts since 2002. Your pronouncement that he leans left is literally laughable. He is one of the most philosophically conservative chief justices in history.

On the constitutionality question it’s unsettled. Serious scholars are divided.

You might want to diversify your news uptake a bit. Informed people don’t just repeat what they read on Gateway Pundit or Breitbart.

The fact Justice Roberts, a swing judge that leans to the left, refuses to preside over the impeachment trial says enough about it.

This will turn into nothing, just like the Russian collusion trial. You can’t impeach a former President. Everything Democrats are doing goes against the Constitution.

Don’t count on conviction. Not enough R votes. Should be, but most R senators lack courage and principle.

Delay is good for Ds - they are getting cabinet officials confirmed, which is super important.

The Republicans keep holding up these nominations. I mean how many days did take to get Yellen confirmed ?

Move the hell on.

like

I don’t see why they can’t do more than one thing at a time. Sure it may take time but I see the new administration getting on with the business, folks being confirmed. Etc.

I mean, at this point, it is patently unconstitutional, because he is no longer president. They have no authority to continue.

Regardless of the procedural issue there’s no way this group of GOP senators is convicting Trump. The GOP has inextricably linked itself to the Trump side of the GOP. there’s been senators on record saying if they convicted trump it’s the end of the GOP, and very few of these people care about anything beyond maintaining power. So don’t kid yourself that 17 of these craven cowards will do anything other than continue kissing the ring to try to save their own futures.

like

This is too funny... we are saying this will empower people to kill a cop? What about the last 9 months of looting, rioting, assaulting police officers and yes killing cops by the radical left? Do as I say not as I do is getting really old.

likesmartfunny

Ah, the good ol radical left antifa/BLM against the Christian holy Patriots that overtook our Capitol and incited a coup to overthrow our Government argument again. Sigh.

Get to it how? The senate has been in session for five days.

No way in hell are 17 Republicans going to vote to convict. That malignant party cares foremost about power, and conviction will result in a primary challenge and reduced fundraising.

And before someone tries to make a comparison to Democrats, please remember that party forced Al Franken to resign over a years old picture of him touching a boob.

But at least it will put GOP candidates on record for 2022 and 2024, and further demonstrate its anti-democratic nature.

But what can the democrats do if the republicans don’t take ownership for being complicit in creating this monster. Looks like the republicans are a pack of cowards.

Nothing

Confirmations to critical cabinet positions to allow them to affect the changes 81 million Americans voted for and addressing the pandemic that has killed 450,000+ Americans, is more important than rushing an impeachment trial while reporters and law enforcement continue to unearth more and more damning evidence.

Weather Trump is convicted or not or even barred to run president that’s a headache for the Republican Party. Trump is a divisive figure if republicans don’t convict him or bar him from running then they run the risk of Trump continuing to divide the party. If they convict him then they run the risk of loosing some of the 75 million voters he garnered. My opinion is whatever the outcome is conviction or no conviction it’s a loss for American democracy but a headache for the republicans to sort out.

likefunny

I think they will rely on the argument that this isn’t constitutional - the argument that impeachment is meant for seated officials. And he’s a private citizen now. It gives them an out.

He won't get convicted, not even a remote chance. Must have cut a deal with GOP that he will help them in 2022 rallying his base behind them, only if he doesn't get convicted; otherwise he will launch his own party to 'suicide bomb' the GOP.

like

Good old Mitch strikes again. Democrats we’re ready to start trial whole Trump was still on office. Mitch says nope, let’s wait until Trump leaves and strikes a deal with Chuck Schumer to wait.

Now Trump is out of office and good old Mitch says nope, what’s the point of a trial on Trump if he’s no longer in office?

Gotta love it, you can’t make this stuff up.

like

Mitch is literally holding up the senate. The GOP are still the committee chairs right now....

I don’t think conviction will happen. I think the only conceivable way that happens is if:

1) There is video evidence and witness testimony so damning that people take to the streets (unlikely)
2) Shelby, Portman, Toomey, Romney, Collins, Murkowski, & Sasse vote to convict.
3) 10 more Republicans somehow grow a spine and do their constitutional duty

So... unlikely to happen
