Signed a new lease a couple weeks ago for a new place. My current & private landlord called me and said he valued me as a tenant and offered to lower the price on rent by $150/month(the new place was $200 less/month) He’s been a great landlord, always has fixed issues timely and without hesitation. Now I’m really thinking about staying and seeing if I could cancel the lease I signed.

Ok. I assume there is a penalty for breaking the lease you just signed. How much is it and then decide if it is worth it to you.

The realization that I have a great landlord. Yes, I noticed he always fixed things without a doubt and without hesitation. But it never really clicked until today how much he valued me and I appreciated that he gave me the option. Now i realize it’s not just the money, but the relationship I have with him.

It’s likely too late. Unless the new landlord is an individual person, I doubt they’d let you break the new lease penalty free. My lease for example says I’m on hook for the entire lease until they are able to rerent it. If you truly wanted to pursue staying, your best bet is to find someone who can take over your new lease.

It’s a management company as the new place was in an apartment complex. I gotta look more into, I’m hoping I’m able to stay!

Hmm he probably should have offered the lower rent when you had told him you wouldn’t be renewing. I’m assuming you gave a deposit and first months rent on the new place. If you don’t get that back, is that something your landlord is willing to cover?

like

Well that’s good it’s only the security deposit. See if he’s willing to cover the full amount.

Check if your state or the management company has a cool off period for lease signing. You may have 3 days to say JK. Probably not though.

Thanks for the advice. I will look into it!

A good landlord is everything. Sounds like you have one worth sticking with.

like

Exactly. Tough to find them these days! Especially private ones

Why did you want to live in the first place? If it wasn't just about money will the reasons you wanted to leave change or improve if you stay?

like

It was just money. I honestly did not know my landlord valued me as much as he did until he called me today after I told him

like

What’s your new lease?

Like the price?

How much is the break fee?

Not sure, will head over tomorrow

I’d stay if I were you. You’ll save most of the lease break penalty by not incurring moving costs. Being in an apartment you like with a landlord you have a good relationship with is kinda rare.

Agree!

In the past two weeks my work has picked up 10x what it was previously. Now I’m working 70+ hr weeks and often my projects are submitted nearly before deadline since I’m shuffling multiple at once. My team is understaffed and there’s no plan to hire people due to COVID-19. How do you manage to tackle the day instead of let it tackle you? I feel like no one knows how much I’m suffering since I’m WFH’ing and try to relay positive emotions over FaceTime or messages.

Been hell of a year so far. Sort of bittersweet. Lost my job a few months back. Laid off the first time. But my net worth is all time high.
