I say if you’re asking here, do it... and go even higher. I’m a hypocrite bc I don’t ask for shit, but I give good advice ;)
🙄
You'll get there some day, kid.
Are you asking for a severance package in your offer? Curious what others do at SVP+ level. Have a couple friends who negotiated a 15K severance if laid off within 6 months out of no fault of their own (loss of anchor account or other agency business, etc)
I had four months built into my old a
Job (brand side). Negotiated an extra month for each year of service. Def worth to ask to build into agreement upfront.
Signing bonus will be a function of what your leaving behind. Will you be walking away from a potential bonus payout? Do you have restricted stock that’s about to vest?
For financial security you want to be negotiating severance into the package. If you haven’t already it might be worth engaging a lawyer.
Depends on what you’ll be doing in your new role. Managing a massive piece of business that will heavily rely on your leadership? You can probably demand more.
Yes. Around $10 million client
Reading this thread only makes me want to work harder and climb up the ladder even more. You can make some really good money in this industry.
Reading this post makes me never want to work in advertising again.
While you’re at it, ask for a guaranteed year 1 bonus. Of a specific amount.
Ever hear of Justin Timberlake?
Cry me a river
If the rest of the job is an upgrade, the comp should be icing.
If it’s all about comp, look to the place that will give you the $ bump you want.
Simple, no?
If an employer values a candidate and truly respects the individual enough to extend an offer to be a part of a team that’s expected to perform above and beyond, looking out for one’s financial security should not be a trivial request. Over the years, for decades, agencies have taught us that there is no such thing as loyalty. So, please don’t trivialize the idea of looking for some financial security. It’s bad form.
As said earlier it’s about what you are walking away from. These would typically be these items:
1. Restricted stock that would vest soon
2. 401k match that would vest soon
3. Likely bonus that would come soon
And agree something like 15-20% of salary is about the max you could hope for.
I haven’t heard of sign on bonuses in decades. Relocation expenses are even uncommon.
Everyone I know, including me, received signing bonus in the last couple of years. The market is turning quickly, but historically speaking, they’ve still been a thing.
New company? I'd ask for more
You sage.
That sounds low for that title. I have director friends signing 15-20k.
Shoot for like 40-45. That would be much more in line with what I assume new salary would be.
15-20% of your salary.
I always found sign-in bonus a scam, you pay a lot in taxes and it’s not there the next year, my preference is to negotiate more comp / recurring bonus and severance package. Unless I am missing what is sweet about the sign-in bonus, and I would love to be enlightened.
@SeniorDirectorOps if you don’t see what’s sweet about a sign on bonus then join the rest of us in not being paid big enough bonuses and stock awards to worry about it
